Fanfiction – Building Castles in Another’s Sandbox
I write fanfiction.
Damn that felt good to say.
Anyway. My family circle knew not of this hobby of mine, nor is it known among my circle of sadly number-deficient friends. In fact, only my best friend of 19 years knew of this fact, and that was only after almost a year of writing fanfiction.
I expected rejection or at least derision – it’s a common reaction in Real Life, believe me – which is why I’m relieved when she said she didn’t mind, even going as far as reading some of the stuff I’ve written. She tries to write her own fanfic when she has the time, and I encourage her time and again to do so to hone her skills in characterization and writing style.
And because I enjoy reading her fiction too.

H1N1: Where We Stand
Even before the WHO declared Influenza A H1N1 pandemic alert level phase 6, I have been following the progress of the disease in many countries, especially in the Philippines (where my parents and relatives are), Saudi Arabia (where my family lives), United Arab Emirates, Singapore, USA and Canada. I am deeply obsessed of knowing the latest information on the number of new cases being counted and the progress of treating the patients as well as on the efforts to control the spread of the virus. When I reach home, I relay the news to my husband. I talk to my family about it. I call my friends to update them. I feel that everyone needs to be aware in order to protect themselves from the spreading infection.
Being a pharmacist, although I am currently not engaged in professional practice, I have no doubt that scientists will be able to find a vaccine against H1N1 soon. I am always praying and hoping that a vaccine would be available and that drug manufacturing firms would exhaust all their resources to come up with a prophylactic drug to solve the pandemic.

(I) Envy Them
At four minutes past eight in the evening, it is raining. Outside, our neighbors are caterwauling, which is the least bit of comfort one can receive after another day spent trying to understand what the law says in letter or in spirit. Take your pick. With microphone on one hand and beer on another, I hear that song again, but this time the lyrics are sung far worse than the nights that went before. From where I sit, I can see nobody dancing but I speculate the guy must be gyrating behind plain sight. With no Katrina wiping the sweat off the edges of his skin, what more had there been one, or a close semblance to one. I wonder why they do not hold singing contests in this forgotten artery of the metro. You really have to wonder, too, how idle times transform ordinary lives into something more or less than what you would expect. At the end of yet another hectic day, it’s quite enough to reward yourself in your own liking
