IELTS sucks! This is an account of my horrible experience in taking the IELTS test.
After my speaking test at Taipan Building in Ortigas, I took the IELTS exam yesterday (October 24, 2009) at Shangri-La EDSA which was administered by the British Council.
The Speaking “Test”: The longest 15 minutes of your life
The examiner was an old British guy. He was polite during the opening questions, when suddenly – for no reason at all, he TERRORIZED me! I mean it literally. T-E-R-R-O-R! It was like he was high on drugs or something. He annoyingly spilled out the questions, his eyes popping out at me in an intimidating manner, every step of the way – distracting and preventing me from being able to deliver my responses properly! I almost lost self control right then. He’s a lucky old fart although I have recurrent thoughts of waiting for him at the lobby, follow him, and give him a piece of my mind.
The Listening “Test”: 30 minutes, 4 sections, 40 questions
The 1st part was a giveaway. The 2nd part starts to ridicule you. The 3rd part is shockingly out of this world, will scramble your brains out and leave you clueless that and the damn recording was over before you know it! And the 4th part is the blend of 2nd and 3rd part with a kick of a middle finger.
The Reading “Test”: 60 minutes, 3 reading passages, totaling 40 questions.
IELTS claims that the “texts will be taken from books, magazines, journals and newspapers”. It would give an impression that what they will provide topics from everyday life. Wrong!!! A part of the reading test goes that way, however, the main parts seemed to be pulled out of a statistician’s ass. It’s not a reading activity per se. The section requires a data expert. At this point, my seat mates were shaking their heads.
The Writing “Test”: 60 minutes
Test 1 – provided a graph of water consumption from 5 countries. It seemed okay at first glance, until I scrolled slightly further down the page. There’s a second chart comprising of prices of water per country. The damn graph isn’t made to simply assess the English competency of candidates. It’s a graph similar to the ones I used in my thesis back in college! It solicits an extremely technical description. I believe test 1 was meant to slow an examinee down in relation to test 2.
Test 2 – indicated a proposition whether a university education should involve itself with regards to employment. Write your pro VS anti views, site an example and then conclude. This proposition requires 250 words. That’s right, 250 words under extreme time pressure, plus, the answer sheet was cleverly designed! It is such a shallow, limited topic to puke out 250 words!
Although I am hopeful in achieving my desired score because I paid thousands to get it, I lost all the respects I had in mind with the British Council. I really feel they ridiculed us Filipinos yesterday by subjecting us to that absurd ordeal.
It is so much easier for mail-order-whores to migrate to commonwealth countries than professionals.
My opinion on the IELTS -> it is insanely expensive for such a simple process. Aside from the speaking “test”, not even a plain Canadian, Australian, British or New Zealand citizen would pass it beyond Band 7. The message is loud and clear. They want PROFESSIONALS to stay the fuck away from their countries… but they can’t say it frankly, otherwise, we (the dumb fools who “thought” it’s just an above average English proficiency test) wouldn’t let them laugh all the way to the bank with our hard earned money.
The IELTS exam must be investigated by the Congress and the Senate because millions of pesos and thousands of Filipinos (mostly college graduates and professionals) who wanted to migrate to commonwealth countries undergo this compulsory “testing”. They must be able to substantiate the way they mark their “tests” and on what grounds.
IELTS is not just an English test. It’s the first stage of screening-out immigrants.
Will I, a Filipino, get a 9 for writing – this shit?
