The Filipino Fighter

How unfortunate it is that only Pacquiao’s fight was really talked about when three fights featuring some of the Philippines’ best fighters all took place on the same day.

Of course, the whole world knows what happened to Pacquiao, so I won’t bother with words on that.

How about what happened with Z Gorres? In a devastating twist of fate, Gorres collapsed and fell into a coma mere moments after he was proclaimed the winner of the bout? Now he finds out that he can never compete in the ring again.

And even more tragic was the fight of Brandon Vera (though only half-Filipino, he still very much carried the nation’s name up high) against UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture. In what was the biggest fight of Vera’s career, the judges scored a unanimous 29-28 victory in Couture’s favor, despite shots that clearly hurt Couture and the lack of aggression from the latter.

Ha.
