Thanks UP Pep!

September is so far not turning out to be a good month, for me at least. I’m up to my neck with work (most of it is my own fault so I can’t complain), my husband decided to quit his job, babies are being dumped near local churches and in airplane trash bins, and the issue of who’s at fault in last month’s bus hijacking at the Rizal Park is taking too long to resolve.

But God always offers us a silver lining, no matter how hopeless our situations may seem to be.

The UP Varsity Pep Squad gave my spirit a much-needed “boost” when they bagged the UAAP Cheerdance Competition 2010 championship last weekend. I will not go into a detailed discourse on the competition’s history or justify why they totally deserved to win. (You’ll get a lot of that reading the comment sections on Youtube.) Nor will I analyze whether UP Pep are good enough to compete on the international level.

They did deserve to win and that, they did with flying colors. Even if they didn’t win, it felt great just watching UP Pep Squad’s performance – the routine was inspired, well-conceptualized, and I daresay, spiritually uplifting. The energy of the dancers alone easily eclipsed that of the other seven squads’ combined. It was bombastic. Apparently, four out of five judges thought so, too.

I was waiting for a hi-def video to come out before blogging about this; the footage by Studio 23 was less than satisfactory. (They should give special training to cameramen covering such events. For real.)  Finally, someone who caught the entire performance on cam at a very good angle made my wishes come true. (Thanks to YOU.)

So thank you UP Pep for being a highlight to my not-so-pleasant month.

Thank you because your mere existence makes me proud to be an Iska.

Thank you for reminding us that nothing is impossible and that fortune favors the bold. Thank you for proving once again that talent, hardwork, and faith combined can make you invincible. ‘Til next year.
