The Sumilao Farmers – a Filipino Success Story
It was recently announced in local media that the Sumilao Farmers from Bukidnon, Mindanao, have finally gotten back their 144 hectares of land.
For those of you unfamiliar with the story, here is a brief background: In 2007, fifty-five farmers marched all the way from their hometown to Manila in order to convince the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to return ownership of 144 hectares of agricultural land to them.
Through various dealings and agreements, the land ended up in the hands of San Miguel Foods Incorporated (SMFI). The company was to begin construction for a piggery on that land, so the farmers were running out of time.
Their efforts were publicized by the media and were supported by various groups and universities. The farmers finally returned to Bukidnon via plane provided by the Philippine government, after SMFI promised to return 44 hectares of the land. That promise was kept.
With the help yet again of students from the Ateneo de Manila University, the farmers began planning organic coffee on their land. The Sumila0 Agri-Enterprise was formed, and now Sumilao Corn Coffee is being sold in both Mindanao and Manila.
Now, another 100 hectares of agricultural land was given to the farmers by the Philippine government. It was a hard fought effort – peaked by the assassination of the leader of the Sumilao Farmers – but one that was not in vain.
For more information on the farmers or the organic coffee they produce, you can visit Environment Philippines or the official website of the Sumilao Agri-Enterprise.

Isang hapon
Ng Disyembre, sa kalagitnaan ng aking
Pagtataka sa langit ako ay nahimbing.
Napaniginipan ko ang aking sariling
Nagsusulat sa lilim ng isang toreng
Nilaspag ng sumasargong kidlat at ulan.
May kaunting liwanag bagamat makapal
Ang ulap na nakabitin sa itaas
Ng bilangguang malawak. Patuloy pa rin
Ang pagdurugo ng pluma at pagtawag
Ng talinghaga, nang sa aking pagbiling,
Sa aking paglingat, walang anu-ano’y
Yumanig ang lupa. Read on
My Two Cents Worth on: Despicable Me
Despicable Me is a 3D-CGI release from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment and was primarily released in July 9, 2010 in the US. The computer animated movie stars Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, and Miranda Cosgrove.
The story revolves around Gru (Steve Carell), a former number one supervillain who was badly insulted by the theft of The Great Pyramid of Giza by a new and younger supervillain named Vector (Jason Segel). To regain his pride, he then plots a big diabolical plan of stealing the Moon to overshadow Vector’s Pyramid act. To do this though, he needs to get a loan from the bank to fund his plan but the bank requires him to get a hold of the Shrink Ray first. He was able to acquire the Shrink Ray but it was unfortunately stolen from him by Vector. All his plans to get the Shrink Ray back failed until he met three orphan girls named Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Elsie Fisher) who seem to discover Vector’s weakness: COOKIES. He then decides on adopting the three girls and uses them as baits for his plan but was later on surprised on how the three girls changed his life.
So what’s my Two Cents Worth on Despicable Me?
Quality wise, I think that it’s a very good film. The “action filled scenes” (e.g. as Gru goes to his secret lab, the theme park, the climactic showdown of Gru and Vector..) was emphasized dramatically because of the film being in 3D. It made you feel the “heat of the moment”.
Content wise, I would say that it’s a movie that parents can go two thumbs up to because of the lesson that it conveys. It teaches the viewers that every person, no matter who they are, has the capability to love and also has the right to be loved. It also shows us that love changes everything, even the baddest supervillain there is on earth. ^_^
So to sum it all up, I would recommend that you watch this film too. It’s a film that your whole family will surely love and enjoy.
