Lions for Lambs

Lions for Lambs, though a work of fiction, is a commentary about the war on terror which America is presently engaged in. It presents varying opinions on the subject and encourages the viewer to take a stand.

The senator portrayed by Tom Cruise represents the politicians of America who battle in the war against terrorism in the safety of their offices. He is presented as an ambitious senator who, though skilled in intelligence, lacks experience in the frontlines. He uses the war on terror to advance his personal agenda.

How NOT to Get a Starbucks 2008 Planner

For the last 2 years, I’ve had the opportunity to get a Starbucks Planner but failed to do so.

Each year, Starbucks issues a card sometime in November which when completed entitles the bearer to a Starbucks Planner. To complete the card, a customer needs to get 24 stickers. Each sticker is equivalent to either a regular beverage or the limited edition one.

The reasons why I failed are as follows.

Original DVDs On Sale

Have you been to an Astrovision lately? I have.

And good thing that I did. Most DVDs are on sale.

The lowest priced ones are at PHP 100. And they’re not the “low-budget” flicks either.

I told the seller I’m only interested in items PHP 100 or less. I got myself a copy of The Princess Bride, which celebrates its 20th year this year. The copy that I got was without special features and subtitles. But it had the movie, scene selections and trailers.

The Starter Wife: Book, TV Series, Contests and Promotion

I don’t remember anymore where I first heard about The Starter Wife but it got my interest right away. I chanced upon a copy of the book in Powerbooks Shangri-La and I read the first few pages. As it has always been my practice not to read the book before the movie, I resisted getting myself a copy.

Hallmark Channel premiered The Starter Wife 2 Sundays ago at 9 PM and I was hooked from start to finish. Debra Messing rocked. The subplots about her friends were also interesting. I thought that it was a one-time thing but apparently they’ve made a series out of it. Now, I can’t wait for Sunday.

LP 21: Heroes Say Cheese

Two things I’m not. A cook and a hero.

But I’d like to believe I once prepared food for heroes.

The 1980’s was a difficult time for the Philippines. The events culminated on three days in February 1986 in what we know now as the EDSA Revolution. People trooped to the streets to show support. They braved death, persecution and hunger.

What My Favorite American Presidents Said

As the US gears for another presidential elections, let me share quotes from my favorite American presidents.

I love the movies. I love how Hollywood makes them.

What follows is a list of my favorite American presidents on the big screen and what they said.

President Tom Beck (Deep Impact, 1998): Cities fall but they are rebuilt. Heroes die but they are remembered.

Have You Said Thank You Yet?

Today is National Thank You Day, the first of its kind in the country. Spearheaded by Toblerone, the event was organized because of the Reader’s Digest survey finding ranking the Philippines as one of the least courteous countries in the world.

The campaign includes a concert at Mall of Asia today, blog posts soliciting creative ways of saying Thank You, etc. Anton of Our Awesome Planet goes further with the launch of the Thank You Art Project.

Planning a Vacation Online

Most of the time, I’m a DIY traveler. Let me share some of my tips on planning a vacation online.

The first thing to do is to read up on the destination. This is of course assuming that you’ve already decided where to go. If you haven’t and are still weighing your options, travel sites are very informative.

Publishers of travel guides have sites where you get most of the data in their books. The more prominent ones are Lonely Planet, Frommers and Fodor’s. Official websites of the destination are also must-sites to view. Some examples are Singapore, Hong Kong, Maldives, Dublin, San Francisco, etc. When you google the destination, remember to include official website or visitors and convention bureau in your search phrase. It is very important that you get your information from a trusted source, more so if you’re booking online. The good thing about both kinds of sites is that they are constantly updated.

Filipino Doctors’ Blogs

A number of Filipino doctors have blogs. What we write about is an interesting mix. While Pulse is a personal blog about what interests me (primarily travel, movies and dining), other doctors’ blogs talk about politics, medical issues, cooking, scrapbooking, etc.

On My Way Home. This is the blog of Dr. Martin Bautista who is perhaps the most popular among the Filipino doctor bloggers. His fame is not so much due to his blogging but because of his attempt to run for a Senate seat. Although unsuccessful in his bid, the votes that he garnered is testament that the Filipinos are ready for change.

Prudence and Madness. Tess Termulo is a well-known figure in Philippine blogosphere. She talks about medicine, personal and socially relevant issues and even shares her dreams.
