Anime Festival Asia 09 in Singapore

Anime Festival Asia 09 is one of South East Asia’s biggest anime, manga, games, and cosplay conventions. It will be held in Singapore at the Suntec Convention Centre from 21st to 22nd November 2009. This year’s Special Guests include Nakagawa Shoko, Fukuyama Yoshiki, Kaname, and Danny Choo.

Cosplay: Handmade VS Commissioned Costumes

Cosplay is the hobby of dressing up and acting out as your favorite anime, game, comic book, or movie character. Some cosplayers dismiss costumes that the wearers did not create themselves, while others are okay with having parts of or their entire costumes made by professionals. The Philippine cosplay community — due to a number of factors like cheap labor and affordable materials, is more accepting of commissioned costumes as a whole.

Eiga Sai Japanese Film Festival 2009

The Japan Foundation Manila would like to invite everyone to the Eiga Sai Japanese Film Festival from 2nd July to 20th August 2009.  Screenings will be held at the Shangri-la Cineplex and the UP Diliman Film Institute, as well as in Davao, Cebu, and Baguio City. Admission is free, and all films come with English subtitles.

Manila isn’t the best place to find J-pop CDs, unlike Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, and even Bangkok. Filipino collectors in Manila have no choice but to go online for their UTADA HIKARU or L’ARC EN CIEL albums.

Philippine Congress Bans “Hentai”

The aim of the new bill is to penalize anyone in possession of “drawings, cartoons, sculptures or paintings depicting children in an explicit sexual activity” with “6 to 12 years imprisonment and a fine of not more than P500,000″.

CBCP Taps into Anime-style Bible Story Phone Downloads

In a bid to counter the rapid decline in Bible readership amongst the Filipino youth in recent years, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines is offering mobile phone downloads of Bible stories and other inspirational material, illustrated in the art style of the popular and ubiquitous Japanese anime.

The Bible Anime project is being produce through the joint efforts of the Philippine Bible Society and Enzima International Inc. — a Manila-based Japanese-owned company supplying the service’s anime-style slides for free.
