Getting Ready to Rumble

June 29, 2008

A few hours from now, Manny Pacquiao will be heading to a slugfest with David Diaz. Will the pinoy boxer prove once again that he is the thorn of Mexican boxers? Or will Diaz be able to put an end to the Pacman’s winning streak? In the meantime, here are a few thoughts that I have written about the boxer from General Santos City, or make it a part of the boxer’s life as I know of it.

Ces Drilon TV Interview

June 24, 2008

Videos courtesy of QTV’s News On Q and Balitanghali. Senator Loren Legarda probably enjoyed the attention she’s receiving because of broadcast journalist Ces Drilon’s rescue. Just in time for the 2010 Presidential elections. No need for a TV commercial. No offense though. I still think that she had a big part in the release of Ces Drilon, Jimmy Encarnacion and Mindanao State University professor Octavio Dinampo.

Mugabe Wins Re-election

June 24, 2008

Robert MugabeI was watching Channel News Asia’s morning show this morning. I was surprised to read on their running headlines that incumbent Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe wins re-election. This happened after his opponent Morgan Tsvangirai back down his Presidential candidacy to prevent more violence and killings targeted to his supporters and political party.

The “Longest Quickie”, Frank the Typhoon, typhoons, and Ships

June 24, 2008

Typhoon Miding was the “longest quickie” in Philippine atmospheric history. That was way back in 1986. Frank the typhoon gave his (or her?) share of cataclysm, just like the other typhoons that went before him, although the scale of his madness is yet to be determined. And who can forget Rosing and Monang? More so, will we forget the tragedy of the Princess of the Stars just like the other princesses? Ah, if you will, you might get a taste of lashing from some woman.

Frankie!!!

June 23, 2008

Say hello ang goodbye to the typhoon!!

It’s been twenty hours mula nung nawalan kami ng kuryente kahapon. Since 2am, the power’s out. (Shucks! walang TV, di makapagcharge, la pating internet! Ouch!)

Nagdadasal na akong sana magkakuryente na before or by seven pm. Haay…

It’s only 12pm pero mukhang 7pm na.

Para mawala ang boredom namin, nagyaya ang mommy ko na mag-scrabble habang nagpapalipas oras.

Hmph. La ako sa mood.

“May 100 ang mananalo”

Ang mga salitang yon ang bumuhay sa dugo ko! Wow, easy money! Wahahaha!

Ako pa naman ang champion sa bahay. Easy peasy.

Typhoon Frank

June 22, 2008

It was the usual evening when my hubby and I decided to settle in for the night. It was usual although a bit cooler as it had been raining slightly the whole day. I had heard that signal number 2 had been declared in Metro Manila but I could not feel why. The sky was just a bit gloomy that’s all.

Policemen-Teachers

June 17, 2008

In one of the Philippine Daily Inquirer articles just last month, I read with interest the story about policemen taking the roles of teachers in far-flung areas with insurgency problems. They teach with gun on the side and chalk on one hand. The former is true while the latter is, well, just a thought, considering how anorexic the budget for education has been going on for years. But that’s another story. This is the story of how children cope with their pressing environment and of how “human adaptation” is worth thinking over.

On the “Abduction” (or Kidnapping?) of Ces Drilon

June 11, 2008

In case you’ve missed it, there’s this storm that hit the media more recently, It’s about the “abduction” case of Ces Drilon, the noted journalist from ABS-CBN. Early reports indicate a request from ABS-CBN to the media to make certain “restraints” on issuing details about the case so as to protect Drilon and her crew, along with Octavio Dinampo, a professor and a member of the MNLF senior Shura. As of this time, negotiations are under way.

Newscope That Trip

June 9, 2008

Newscope

Thank goodness to Internet, I can tell everybody and pay my respects for the death of Rudy Fernandez.

I’m not really a fan, but he has a great resume and everything, Lorna Tolentino is lucky!

The fact that it literally took me a click to see the shocking news was a mere fantasy in the olden times when gossip mongers were the source of the fresh and shocking news. Internet really is great.

But being here in Hawai’i wherein you have to apply for a cable to get the news in the Philippines, is a little troublesome and lowers my chances of getting the latest stories.

Not only there’s difference if distance, there’s also time zone! Bummer. (BLOG ENTRY ENDS HERE)

What can Judy Ann Santos explain in less than a minute…

June 5, 2008

You see these people wrestling over the thought of Judy Ann Santos defending what the Meralco people deems needed to be defended, God or Allah or Buddha knows what entertainment can truly bring and wring. It can bring political minds into hysteria over the first sight of a banana. It can wring political minds dry, too.

…that Meralco and the government find the hardest measures to explain? SYSTEM LOSS. (Lmfao)

Why Do Some Countries Remain Poor While Others Grow Rich?

June 4, 2008

This is a question that has never stopped nagging me since the very first time I left this country eleven years ago. It is one thing seeing it on television growing up, it is another being in the First World yourself. Explanations by the likes of F. Sionil Jose - which basically say we are poor because of our culture - is simply unsatisfactory. Read here.

Indiana Jones and the Philippine Rainforests

June 3, 2008

I’m sure you’ve seen this forest conservation ad featuring Harrison Ford, released last May 22, but it’s good to watch it again (and again).  The ad was made by Conservation International, a US-based nonprofit organization founded in 1987 that aims to promote conservation in the jungles, deserts and oceans.

Watch this 30 sec video of Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford as he tells us why we should do what we can to save our rainforests… Click here to watch the video…
