Myron’s Place

July 19, 2008

There are just a few places that stick to my mind when I think of steak - Alfredo’s (but I no longer remember the last time I was there), Larry’s Bar (which no longer serves Filet Mignon), and Steaktown in Shangri-La Mall (salad buffet - yummy!). One in particular caught my fancy when I was strolling along Mall of Asia. It was called Highlands Steakhouse. I did not try it at that time as I knew a meal cost an arm and a leg (about Php1500++). I haven’t gone to any of those places now and the last steak meal that I had left me disappointed.

Misato

July 18, 2008

Do food automatically appear good or taste delicious if your stomach happens to be growling? I have heard myself say that during those times when its way past lunchtime and I buy myself whatever is available in the cafeteria - for hunger more than anything else. I have heard others think that out loud too. And because it happens every time (I am hungry), I assume that nothing will taste bad to me at this state.

Making breads in easy way

June 26, 2008

How many times have you heard people say that they can’t stop eating bread or cakes? It has been said that the first cakes baked in the US were simply small loves of sweet bread, so imagine how far cake making has progressed. Now it may seem extreme to say that food addiction is debilitating. So let’s take a look and see what I mean. CONTINUE READING

Italian Dark Mocha Cake

June 24, 2008

Starbucks has did it again. Each time they come out with a new drink, they seem to couple it with dessert made of similar ingredients. Like when they offered the Dulce De Leche Frappucino and the Dulce De Leche Cheesecake. I can still remember how yummy it was. Hmm.. Now they are offering the Italian Dark Mocha Frappuccino with their Italian Dark Mocha Cake. I do not recall them ever making this a regular thing but apparently it sits well with the customers and now they have created themes for every new drink they introduce to the public. Not that I am complaining though - especially if you are getting to taste these new desserts for free courtesy of your friends (hehe).

Cibo

June 13, 2008

I cannot recall when I first ate at Cibo’s cold steel chairs in Glorietta 3 but I do remember loving it for life. So much so that my friends knew to bring me my favorite Pate di Fegato the day after giving birth to my eldest son via C-section.

Tender Bob’s

June 8, 2008

Tender Bob’s Steaks and Ribs place brings with it old memories of a romantic date in the Libis branch (now gone). It was situated near Starbucks along E. Rodriguez Jr. and offered a warm and cozy ambience suited for couples wanting to cuddle up over a fine meal. I can still remember that we had chosen that place for its famous lamb chops with mint jelly. Hmmm.

Chicken Balsamico

May 30, 2008

This is a dish I made based on a recipe by Linda Gassenheimer in her book, the Low-Carb Bible. I made some modifications because I found myself liking the dish but feeling that there’s just something missing in it (and too much tangy taste). I love her recipes because the food, though low-carb, don’t make me feel deprived, taste great and easy to cook, especially for someone like me lacking in cooking skills! :-)

Shanghai Bistro

May 28, 2008

Truthfully, I am not an avid fan of Chinese cuisine. I cannot say it enough that my taste buds are tired of sesame oil, oyster sauce and soy sauce. But I live in a country where Chinese food is as staple as rice. But once in a while I chance upon a place that serves great tasting Chinese dishes. And I am a hypocrite if I do not admit that of all Chinese edible creations, dimsum is the best. It is also the easiest to imitate. Imagine all the stalls that sell siopao, siomai, sharks fin in all shapes and sizes.

Sebastian’s Ice Cream Kiosk @ SM The Block

May 26, 2008

I was just coming out of SM Cinemas after watching the new Indiana Jones movie when I spotted a new kiosk where it should have been only a congregate of plush seats (”tambayan” seats for the loafers).

It was my first time to try a Sebastian ice cream and so I simply ordered what looked yummylicious: A Chilly Burger!

Fishball Memories

May 26, 2008

Fishballs! Squidballs! Quail eggs! Kikiam!

I was just in Diliman for an errand yesterday, and any visit to my college alma mater is not complete without a pit-stop at the decripit COOP to get my fill of these goodies. Not because I think it’s more sanitary - it’s just the only place where I’ve gotten street food with no adverse consequences following.

Being a doctor, you’d think I would be more wary of any kind of street food - but, truth is, it takes a good deal of willpower for me not to just buy them from anywhere.

Ginataang Kuhol

May 25, 2008

I had always thought that Kuhol (a.k.a escargot or brown snails) was an expensive dish and very hard to find. But despite that perception, I always welcomed when my mom served ginataang kuhol at our house. I did not have the icky reaction to that fact that it was a snail I was trying to pick out from the hard brown shell with a toothpick. Not only was my reaction surprising (I hate anything slimy and slithery a.k.a worms and slugs), my jaw dropped when I found out these little buggers cost about P10 to P20 a cup at the local market.

The easiest thing to do to kuhol is to cook and serve them with coconut milk. It has actually evolved into a famous dish served at places like Cabalen or Kamayan. Now you can have the same at home.

The California Maki in Rice Paper Roll - California Maki with a Twist

May 25, 2008

The California Maki in Rice Paper Roll  - California Maki with a Twist
(California maki wrapped in rice paper)

Most Filipinos that love Japanese Foods, especially the ladies, really love eating California Maki. Maybe it is because it’s the most well known Japanese food, aside from Tempura of course. Other than its appearance and reputation, the taste of California Maki is acceptable in most Filipino palates. For the new starters and still learning to eat food items from the sushi bar, the California Maki is the best choice to start. California Maki’s original recipe from countries outside the Philippines, consist of avocado, crabmeat (it could be real crab meat or imitation crabmeat stick “Kani Kama”), cucumber, and lettuce. However, here in the Philippines, we substituted the avocado with our most favorite mango fruit, which even made the California Maki more delicious. Maybe it is because of the availability of the mango all year round, unlike the avocado that is seasonal.

Dulce De Leche Cheesecake

May 23, 2008

Anyone who likes caramel will also love dulce de leche. They have the same thick gooey consistency and tonsillitis sweet flavor. And that’s mostly why they are best served atop cakes, ice cream, or mixed with other ingredients as an enhancer to the overall flavor of a dessert or pastry. Imagine dulce de leche in your coffee… hmmm sort of like a restructured caramel macchiato.

Roti Mum choco bun

May 18, 2008

The Philippines has always been a good place to start a food craze. Many restaurants and food establishment that start abroad often makes its way through to the malls and stores of Metro Manila. Often, these places customize their menu to cater to the Filipino palate. Take McDonald’s rice meals. There is no such thing in the US.

Such is the same for Roti Mum - the famous coffee bun from Singapore. I had the opportunity to fall in love with this coffee bun last year. A couple of months ago, I heard that they were now serving choco buns. Hmm… sounds yummy right. Unfortunately, I missed the launch of these chocolatey-ness which they offered for the christmas season. So when I found myself looking through the glass at the choco buns cooking inside Roti Mum Megamall, I did not even think twice and bought a box of assorted buns.

Chef Islaw

May 15, 2008

Whenever I eat out, I tend to stay away from Filipino food restaurants simply because I want to eat something that’s different from what I can have at home (and my mom’s a magnificent cook, I tell you). I don’t even like eating at Barrio Fiesta or Cabalen (does that ring a bell?). But if I were to eat in a Filipino restaurant, I’d go to Chef Islaw.

Chef Islaw is located at Level 2 of SM Marilao, Bulacan. It also has a branch at Sta. Lucia East Mall but I don’t know where other branches are located.

Like any other Filipino restaurants, it projects an ambiance reminiscent of nipa huts or the old Spanish houses, with its sliding capiz windows (which by the way, are fake, of course) and wooden furnishings.  I find the soft light conducive for a quiet meal.  Except when there are really rowdy customers.  But at Chef Islaw, I have yet to experience such.

Not A Paid Post On Stick-O

May 15, 2008

A brittle stick about less than a foot long, made of flour, and filled with chocolate stuff inside. Everybody is crazy over it. But you cannot really blame everybody. Even I…I’m being captivated by its addictive taste. The way it caresses my taste buds to heaven — like I don’t wanna escape its tasty cylindrical body. Every bite is more than a pail of water, killing the flames of craving inside me. Yeah, it’s the stick we all want to bite…

May 14, 2008

Alas! Now I have the time to blog about all the recent past events since classes are totally over, sorry for the delay blame my [required] summer clinical duties for the late post. Better be late than nothing :D

I had so much fun and belly content that day with all the delicious food and drinks each restaurant has to offer, actually the Spot Pass Food Tour has two events on different dates and places the first was in TriNoMa and the second one is in Bonifacio High Street and Serendra. I didn’t have a chance to come at TriNoMa because of duty. So it’s pay back time on the second one,

Authentic Thai Food in photos

May 13, 2008

Thai food will assault your senses with a well calibrated interplay of taste mixed with smell, texture, and visual appeal. Enough said. Below are photos of what we had for dinner just a few hours ago. I could have these all my life and never tire of them. Wait, lightbulb moment: I’ll go buy some spice here so I can try replicating these sumptuous dishes at home in Manila! iGenius!

Enough with the talk. The photos, let me show you them. (TIP: you may drag the photos to see parts of the width covered by the margin. Try it! It was WOW for me first time I did it. Kthnx)

Get Hooked! Again!

May 10, 2008

The Fish & Co Seafood restaurant is one of my favorite dining places in Makati. I accept that their prices are way beyond my daily budget (or even my weekly) but there are times when the craving for fish and chips justifies blowing your budget to smithereens. To satisfy my desire to eat fish and chips, I have devised a plan to convince a friend or even several friends to come and share the dining experience with me.
