We Filipinos Always Manage to be in the Headlines in Canada

April 20, 2008

We described the side comment from the Desperate Housewives about Filipino doctors as degrading, right? Now, I could not, in my simple little mind figure out why someone would upload a confidential operation on Youtube. I am talking about that “Vicente Sotto Medical Center Scandal.” I’ve seen it. Although it was taken down from Youtube, you could still find the link where you can download it - for $1.00. Talk about enterpreneurship………. Well, i’ve downloaded it for free…

I came across it last week but I just shook my head. I didn’t dwell on it. But today while reading news from the CBC website (Canadian Broadcasting Centre), the VSMCC Scandal was one of the headlines. Of course it doesn’t say VMSCC scandal but “Doctors face dismissal after surgery posted on Youtube.” Here’s the link, read it for yourself - Doctors face dismissal after surgery posted on Youtube . At the bottom of that article, you can see different reactions from Canadians.

Teenage Sex is A Reality

April 16, 2008

One of my observations when I started working as a pharmacist here in Canada is the fact that parents are very open about teenage sex. During my first few months in the pharmacy, I noticed that the Moms would personally come to pick-up their daughter’s contraceptive pills (birth control pills). The popular brandnames for contraceptives are Diane 35, Alesse, Tri-Cyclen, MinOvral, Triphasil, to name a few. Anyway, most of these pills may be used also for acne control. But I tell you, the Moms would pick up those contraceptive pills to make sure that their teenage girls don’t get pregnant. Let’s face it, a teenager will do what a teenager wants to do. I’ve been there. Hot

Blogging May Not Be Deadly, But It Has a Whole Sweatshop of Other Problems

April 7, 2008

It’s currently the hottest story at TechMeme. The New York Times reports that “In Web World of 24/7 Stress, Writers Blog Till They Drop“. Drop dead, that is. They consider professional blogging a “digital-era sweatshop”, referring to a factory where its workers are sorely underpaid and unprotected.

But I have to say that NYT is going somewhere with its term, sweatshop.

The Blog Rounds - At A Crossroads

April 1, 2008

Welcome to the Middle of Nowhere and the 3rd Edition of The Blog Rounds, a weekly blog carnival for Filipino medical bloggers. This week’s theme is “At a Crossroads,” featuring posts about the choices doctors and other health professionals make, and how their career influences them.
Before anything else, I’d like to thank all the medical bloggers who participated in this edition of The Blog Rounds for their enthusiastic response. Many new voices have been added this week - and I am hoping this won’t be the last time they will be joining our particular chorus! Given the very personal nature of the topic for the week, the honesty and candor of all the bloggers has made it a joy to read the stories they have chosen to share.
Now, I would like to help them share their stories with all of you.

Without further ado, I bring you TBR 3 - At a Crossroads.

Call For Submission of Articles For Second Edition of TBR

March 13, 2008

As I’ve promised, I’m now posting the theme for next week’s TBR (The Blog Rounds), which will be posted here at Prudence, M.D. on March 18, 2008, 8 P.M. (Philippine Time).

I’ve had several topics in mind but, for the upcoming TBR, I choose:

“The Internet and Philippine Medicine”

We’ve started the TBR with a bit of nostalgia, looking back at how Medicine was in the early days. For next week, I think we could delve into the present issues concerning the use of internet as a technology to help (or hinder?) the progress of Philippine medicine.

Choose whichever style of writing you’re comfortable with. Write an essay about an experience using internet (or specifically Web 2.0) in medical education/practice (a funny anecdote, perhaps, on how the internet has saved your life during a grand rounds?). Or maybe share your insights about how the availability of medical knowledge online affected the perception of non-medical people on medicine. Or, if you fancy something different, write your thoughts in poem form!

Interested? Read more about joining next week’s TBR here.

TBR is not limited to MDs only! For any blogger who’re into health-related blogging, please do join us! It’ll be fun!

Finally, a FILIPINO Medical Blog Grand Rounds!

March 5, 2008

theblogrounds.jpg

I’m so excited typing this introductory post (my heart is thump-a-thumping!) that I almost forgot that I’m mourning (but enough of that for now…).

So, FINALLY, a grand rounds of the best in the PHILIPPINE MEDICAL BLOGOSPHERE: THE BLOG ROUNDS!

I’ve spoken with Bone M.D. previously about how it would be nice if we were to have a medical blog carnival similar to the Grand Rounds in which I’ve participated for some time (see the post in which I’ve hosted the Grand Rounds or GR for the first time and the time when I got featured in the pre-rounds of Medscape). The Grand Rounds is a weekly blog carnival of medical posts, which could be centered around a certain theme or it could be non-themed and is hosted by different bloggers.

Food Post #2: Roast Porkchops with Potatoes and Leeks

Roast Porkchops with Potatoes and Leeks 1

And so the challenge of coming up with a gourmet meal continues. I came up with something original. One thing I hate is that I don’t have them big white plates for better presentation. Anyway, after several failures and misses in my cooking, I managed to come up with something pleasing to both the eyes and the mouth.

If you’re trying this recipe, please let me know how it turns out in your end. Also, let me know what else can be added to improve the taste.

Caffeine really increases miscarriage

A new study finds out. This study was a follow up on previous researchers on the effects of coffee, caffeine particularly, on expectant mothers. Previous studies suggest that drinking just a couple cups of coffee a day doesn’t pose much of a threat. However, the latest research prove this findings wrong.

Food Post #1: Lechon Kawali with a twist

January 21, 2008

Lechon Kawali

Ever since my marriage, I’ve developed a love for cooking. I’ve started cooking different meals for my wife (since we’re poor and we can’t househelp). Of course, I started with the basics. The simple ones, gradually evolving to more complicated dishes. This isn’t the first time I made Lechon Kawali. It’s the first time though, that I cooked it using a thin-assed pot. Fortunately, due to my madcookingskillz, it turned out to be awesome.

Here’s my simple recipe: Continue reading…

UP Centennial Lecture Series (Part II)

January 16, 2008

Dr. Baldomero Olivera Today, I had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Baldomero M. Olivera, the second speaker in the UP Centennial Lecture Series via video telecast at the SEARCA Umali Auditorium here UPLB. He was conferred Doctor of Science, honoris causa, by the university at the UP Film Center at the UPD amidst well decorated alumni, directors, regents, chancellors, students and of course some special guests. His lecture was entitled, FROM CONE SNAIL VENOMS TO DRUGS: THE SCIENTIFIC ODYSSEY OF A UP GRADUATE. Being a zoology major, his topic on conotoxin as a potent neurotoxin that could replace morphine as a pain reliever interested me. His flag species, Conus magus, which is particularly abundant here in the country, has a remarkable venom that can do something similar to a combination drug therapy.
