MEMO: TO: ALL NEW EMPLOYEES/NEWBIE’S.

December 7, 2007

MEMO

TO: ALL NEW EMPLOYEES/NEWBIE’S.

FROM: HR Department

RE: FRIENDLY ADVICE FROM YOUR HR DEPARTMENT

Just a friendly reminder to all new employees/newbie’s

HR Department is friendly, but the perception of all of us in HR is evil thus; we are providing you some honest advice from the evil himself. Need to fire someone? HR can do that for you. Do you want to square-off with HR? Still, HR can do that for you. Mind you, our supervisor before asked me to square it off with him outside the company premises just to settle things. I’m no coward (t’was really scary you know) so I accepted his proposal but, I told him not until I’m done writing the incident report. So who’s the chicken now? Anyway, still interested of messing up with HR?

Reminders to all new employees/newbie’s:

1.) The company is not responsible for your motivation. The company can only provide maintainers thus; you should motivate yourself in advance since you brag it to us that you’re a highly motivated individual, so prove it.

2.) The company is not responsible for your growth. Hence, be responsible for your growth, pursue advance studies, specialized trainings etc. at your own expense and good luck.

3.) The company doesn’t just provide any training to newbie’s or to any employees, and don’t question us why, it is because we know the difference of what’s nice to know and what’s needed to know.

4.) Memorize your employee handbook if possible for you not to suffer the consequences of your future undesirable actions.

5.) Do not remind us of your 5th month appraisal because we know our job better than you do.

Fresher’s Guide for their first 1,000 days of employment

December 4, 2007

Fresher’s Guide for their first 1,000 days of employment

This article was inspired by the book Mission Critical Leadership by Paddy Miller. The book was quite expensive at that time but now, how painful it is seeing the book is now on sale for only P 100.00. Anyway, I actually bought this book 2 – 3 years ago and begun reading it without understanding the contents of it. My bad, but of course you can’t blame me for that since I’m just an ordinary guy at that time with extraordinary dreams, and now, still. Nothings changed. To continue, basically the book is very useful to executives since the book is written for them, not for me, nor for those fresher’s or for those ordinary employees like us in general. But mind you, there’s a treasure in it. On one hand, I created a twist of the book. I gathered some points, and made it as a guide for me to reach my goals. But unluckily, I didn’t reach my goals in life in a stricter sense but I’m pretty confident that with this book, I learned something worth sharing to those open minded yuppies like me. As they say, success is not measured on what earthly things you posses, recognitions you’ve been thrown at, but on what you’ve become and what your capable of doing after those trials and struggles you’ve managed to nailed.

Is your company moving or just trying to terminate you indirectly?

December 3, 2007

Is your company moving or just trying to terminate you indirectly?

First of all, I would like to inform everyone that our site is now fully functional using Internet Explorer browser since it has been reported that it was not. We’ve fixed the issue just last yesterday and up until now we’re still trying to retrieve all the files. If you’ll notice any bug’s again, please do not hesitate to drop us a line.

Moreover, back up files was not that useful and that I don’t know. I keep receiving errors once importing the files. Worst, all our 100+ registered users were all deleted coupled with our partner links thus, were very sorry if you can’t find your links in the front page for now. Most retrieved links are placed on our link directory for the meantime. We will be transferring those links in our frontpage once done fixing things.

So, is your company moving or just trying to mass terminate all of you indirectly? Quite tricky ey? Don’t worry you’ll be enlightened after reading this short entry as to why I came up with this mind boggling opinion.  Let me till you this, companies are getting smarter everyday and if you think our labor code if full proof, your dead wrong, because there are lot’s of things that you don’t know that most HR know. Do you want me to tell you what I know? Sure I will, but let me do it in my own little way.

I sell books.. Just another unemployed.

November 29, 2007

I sell books.. Just another unemployed.

I’m tired of selling books that’s why I quit. Uttered words by a stranger whom I once chat with the other night…

I once strolled around Ayala and I felt hungry so I went to PansitPalabok stand and yes, just the kind of food I can afford aside from it’s my favorite. Anyway, I saw this guy alone trying to finish his stuffs so sensing that this guy needs a companion and someone to talk with I joined him. Well of course, guys can just blend any time any where but mind you I can’t blend with ladies that easily.

How did I know that he needs a company by then? Well some HR is good at body language therefore, I can tell.   Moreover, I’m not also discounting the fact that we’re a bit confident as compared to girls so we can just talk to anyone at anytime. I also validated that this guy wanted someone to talk with because he opened up first like where I’m presently connected since I’m wearing my uniform at that time hence, the conversation begin.

Are you more capable than your boss?

November 28, 2007

Are you more capable than your boss?

Worst, you even wanted to acquire your superior’s post knowing that you’re more capable of him/her? If I’m not mistaken you’ve already belittled his/her competence in front of your friends during those times when you were drunk or perhaps backstabbed her that often once career related conversations erupted. This is so unethical and if possible please refrain this.

You know what? Sometimes we think this way when our boss’s started to flood us with deliverables not found in our job description that to some extent he wants us to create reports beyond our imagination.

Moreover, there were also some instances that you need to extend long hours just to provide him/her the report he/she needs that leads us to sacrifice our scheduled dates. Maturity and leadership has also been an issue to the extent that you don’t know were you’re department is heading. These are just the common outcry of a newly hired employee or even to those who’s been with the company for 2-3 yrs. These are but normal if you’re an employee and expect the worst once you’re in there.

You’ll never regret reading this story..

I’ve read these story months ago and for the second time around a colleague of mine forwarded me this story. Some of you might have read this story while others have not thus; I’m sharing this to you and as guaranteed you’ll never regret reading this story. It might be difficult for you to understand some of the words being used by the author but I just wanted to preserve the real essence of the story thus, I’m not providing any translation to it. This is story is worth sharing. This story is worth pondering. This story is worth remembering. This story is worth recalling. These story is your attention.

Lastly, I would like to give credit to the real author of this story who happens to be unknown since I could not trace the real source of this story. To where you are, thank you for sharing this to all of us.

If I were her HR Manager I could have summoned her!

November 27, 2007

If I were her HR Manager I could have summoned her!

Worst, I could have terminated her at once… but wait, I guess I have to do it as per labor policy. Due process it is… This was my reaction to a certain supervisor on that particular mall after I heard her. Just last night after I saw my pitiful face on that book I mentioned in my previous post things turned bad. As to why I did not post this one last night? I just don’t wanna ruin my mood.s

Anyway, the story goes this way. As I was waiting for a buddy whose fitting stuffs in the dressing room I saw these sales ladies gathered around chatting and one was their supervisor. As to why I’m confident that she was? Well she was wearing a more identifiable uniform. I might be wrong but for sure she’s a notch higher in terms of category compared to those folks around her..

Did I say that I saw my face on a book?

Did I say that I saw my face on a book?

Yet another off topic for the week.

Yes, I did saw my face on a book “Exploring Bohol” when me and my girlfriend visited Ayala – National Bookstore to check on new stuffs just hours ago. She’s been telling me about it years ago but it’s just that I don’t believe it and I never cared about it. Just a while ago she took the book and showed me how pitiful I look way back in college. Hahaha.. Wow! Can’t imagine myself stuck in that book and when I tried checking on other related books still my pitiful face was there!

Confident of being a High Performer?

November 26, 2007

Are you confident that you can land a high paying job because you’re a high performer especially if you’re in sales and marketing? Watch out because recruiters together with headhunters are now so careful on assessing potential high post. Aside from a famous quote that “past performances does not guarantee future accomplishment” it has also been noted that high performers achieve such level due to the resources provided by his present or previous employer. Worst, some of these performers did not notice that.

Is your communication skill killing you?

November 26, 2007

This has been the most common dilemma that our job seekers wanted to cope with and has been the source of frustrations to some. Have you taken a long, hard look at how well you communicate with others lately?  I bet the answer is “no”.  Well, I suggest that periodically you review how good you are at being clear in your conversations with others, your writing of letters, reports, etc., and your effectiveness in presenting information or delegating work because this is the key on how confident you can be in closing deals especially if you’re a job seeker. To date, BPO is the hottest industry and most of our fresh graduates have wanted to join the bandwagon but without the English accent and fluency on other various languages you’re not welcome not unless if your tech geek.

Pinoy Big Brother? Just another effective marketing strategy..

Pinoy Big Brother? Just another effective marketing strategy..

This article maybe late but still worth the read knowing that I been wanting to write this short article for months now but I could not find time to reflect on this topic since I’ve got backlogs to attend to.

PBB has been a sensation to all of us since its first edition. Up until now you can still notice various articles related to PBB circulated by known bloggers in the country to date from critiques, rhetoric’s and personal opinions as to how PBB affects our lives.

So what made PBB so successful when they first launched the program? Let me highlight some theories as to how we are glued to this hot program. Aside from being a “kapamilya” you might consider this opinion.

Ambulance Effect. This has been highlighted by some behaviorist of our times that played a very vital role in marketing campaigns. Ambulance effect is when we already know that an accident or somehow related to it had happen still we Filipinos can’t help ourselves to get closer to the unpleasant incident. I don’t know why or is it we wanted to help or we wanted to be present on such undesired incident?

How to Resign to Your Job Gracefully

November 23, 2007

There are numerous reasons why employees would want to quit their job. It can be caused by a bad relationship with colleagues, mental or physical issues, career change decision or wanting a greener pasture. This is always a crucial stage for everyone because of the fear of not handling your resignation properly because you wouldn’t want to burn bridges while your struggling to start anew. Resigning gracefully is possible, below is the top ways on how to do it.

1.It is a norm to resign in person, be professional and face your boss. Set an appointment to discuss this pressing matter and provide a written resignation that contains your intention of leaving, the date you are resigning, the date you would like to live and affix your signature.

2.Do not be a coward and announce your resignation through email, fax or phone. You need to be polite even if your leaving. And don’t ditch your job without a warning, more so if you are planning to work in the same industry.

Does Management know their Staff?

November 22, 2007

I find this story so interesting thus; I’m sharing this to you. You may find it funny but this is not way too impossible to happen on some organizations knowing that CEO’s are very busy pleasing their respective stakeholders.

On walking into the factory, the CEO noticed a young guy leaning against the wall, doing nothing.

He approached the young man and calmly said to him, “How much do you earn?”
The young man was quite amazed that he was asked such a personal question, he replied, none the less, “I earn $ 2 000.00 a month, Sir. Why?”
Without answering, the CEO took out his wallet and removed $6000.00 cash and gave it to the young man and said, “Around here I pay people for working, not for standing around looking pretty! Here is your 3 months salary, now GET OUT and don’t come back”.
The young man turned around and was quickly out of sight.

Where’s my sales commission?

November 22, 2007

This was the most interesting question that my friend asked to her Hr Support before. So what’s the story behind this query? This was her story and of course I asked her permission to post this one for my audience to learn and react if they wanted to. Well, it all started when she was previously employed to a not-so-known Pharmaceutical Company. She told me she was a performer and was able to hit her quota while her colleagues were having a hard time doing it. So, basically not your average Medical Representative and I can attest to that. She’s smart, witty, gutsy and above all very conscientious on things she does. Moreover, the company she worked before was so conservative on stuffs and perks to the extent that they were never given assistance such us a company vehicle for them to use on attending leads.

Corporate jobs especially your job will disappear

November 22, 2007

This may not be new to you but to someone it may be. Are you happy that you’re occupying a “thinker’s or advisors’ job? An analyst to be exact or somehow you occupy a bigger room in your corporate office coupled with a thick carpet? Watch out coz you’re job will soon be extinct. Are you kidding me? Nope! I’m not kidding here though it’s just a possibility. Who knows? Because of technology some jobs and functions were scraped out and if your not lucky your not one of them. For sure you can name some of your friends or people whom you know who were so badly affected when AI visited your office and stayed there for good. Actually, I’m not talking about those manual jobs alone here but rather your job as an advisor, corporate planner, analyst etc. So what’s that suppose to mean? It means that your days are counted.

Conversation with a dissatisfied employee..

November 21, 2007

It’s so sad to hear companies luring applicants for an expensive training. Once you signed the training agreement you’ll spend two years first under their shackles before you can hop to a new opportunity. Worst, the base pay is not that competitive compared to new emerging industries i.e. BPO well of course you can’t blame them. Work environment is not conducive for working as well as for learning. Some companies have devised their strategies just to pin down yuppies to their companies. This is due to the fact that promising graduates has been lured to high paying salaries offered by the BPO Industry. So to compete and grab a few heads from that trend a training bond has been designed for you.

So why took the bait? Because of your tempting promises we bite. Career growth is not just about earning promotions because you’ve acquired certain technical skills but rather learning more skills and competencies as well as broadening your horizon. BPO sectors have been practicing this one since talents are so scarce. They’ve resorted to creating their own corporate university just to mitigate the risk of loosing in the end. Promotions have been very fast wherein some questions have been raised if they’re really capable. Are they mature? Can they handle people? Just a couple of the most common questions we should be asking to those leaders who are directing us. I pity those staffs that’s been administratively reporting or functionally reporting to those new breed of executives i.e. Portable Generation. Opppsss.. this is not the kinda story I want to project but rather the other side of the coin..

Fresh graduate? Need to boost your employability? No problem…

November 19, 2007

This has been the common question our fresh graduates ask after graduation that is on how to boost ones employability, on how to keep up with the pace and avail of that competitive edge on job hunting. This has also been a common dilemma to average students whose common routine while still at school was, school, house, school and house again. But if you’re well oriented on how this World Wide Web works then for sure spending a lot of time on the internet has also been part of your daily routine compared to studying your lessons. 80% of you have a Friendster account not knowing that Friendster has long been dead not to mention also that a certain percentage of that population have their profiles uploaded to various dating sites. No question about that. 15% of you own a blog or you’re so called public diary or you can have it private using the settings while 5% of you own a website. Some has heavily invested on this one thus, I’d rather encourage one to own a blog and have your blog’s traffic monetized compared to having a Friendster account. Blog’s can also connect you to friends, relatives and family members which have been the sole purpose behind that business model as to why Friendster exists.

In addition, if you’re into gigs, gimmick and into meeting new people then I would suspect your self-esteem is a notch higher (non-meta-analysis supported) compared to others and for sure you’re not behind in terms of net activities especially to networking sites since I often heard teens exchanging of YM ID’s or even Friendster accounts on venues I once lurked with. Add me and I’ll add you.. Sorry not for me exchange links would be fine.

Ten Career Skills to Keep You Employable in the 21st Century

November 19, 2007

I saw this article on one of those forums that I frequently visit i.e Hr Philippines. This has been shared by a close friend of mine Major (Rtd) Teoh who has been so active to the group and has been moderating the egroup ever since. This article has caught my attention and I find if to relevant to my topics thus, I’m sharing this to you.

Ten Career Skills to Keep You Employable in the 21st Century
Karla Brandau

Most people drive through life looking in their rearview mirror and judging the future by the past. They have a really good view of where they have been and mistakenly think the future will be similar to the past as they make decisions based on their previous experiences. Even though past experience gives a base for the future, there are many employability factors to take into account as you plan to grab one of the best jobs in 2010 and beyond.

The future work world will be even more global. If your job is not one that requires you to physically be in one place, i.e. serving food, washing windows and stocking grocery shelves, you will be competing with bright and hungry workers in India, China, Korea and other developing nations around the globe.

Competing in the new environment will require higher levels of competence and necessitate looking straight ahead, not constantly glancing rearview mirror for warm fuzzy feelings about what you have achieved in the past.

Here are 10 skills to acquire and refine that will increase your professional confidence level and make you more employable in the 21st Century:
