The Lange Foundation – Jillian Lange

The Lange Foundation featured on Oprah is a foundation dedicated to adopting animals/pets that no longer have their homes. Therefore, stopping or minimizing pet killings, those are on deathrow on most shelters that don’t have space.

It would be nice if we have something like this in the Philippines. Anyways, here is the video on Oprah.

Quezon Trip

May 26, 2008

Quezon folksMy vacation trips continued last Friday with my officemates to Real, Quezon. After office, we had our dinner at SM MegaMall then we went to a certain terminal in Manila going to Quezon. We almost occupied the van since we were eight people. It was a long trip to Quezon, that’s all I can say. When the other passengers requested to stop to the nearest gasoline station, we were able to take pictures and used the comfort room. The next stop was already in Quezon were we had “arozcaldo complete.” Complete meaning arozcaldo with chicken, egg and chicharon. That arozcaldo only costs 25 pesos, cheap right?

The California Maki in Rice Paper Roll - California Maki with a Twist

May 25, 2008

The California Maki in Rice Paper Roll  - California Maki with a Twist
(California maki wrapped in rice paper)

Most Filipinos that love Japanese Foods, especially the ladies, really love eating California Maki. Maybe it is because it’s the most well known Japanese food, aside from Tempura of course. Other than its appearance and reputation, the taste of California Maki is acceptable in most Filipino palates. For the new starters and still learning to eat food items from the sushi bar, the California Maki is the best choice to start. California Maki’s original recipe from countries outside the Philippines, consist of avocado, crabmeat (it could be real crab meat or imitation crabmeat stick “Kani Kama”), cucumber, and lettuce. However, here in the Philippines, we substituted the avocado with our most favorite mango fruit, which even made the California Maki more delicious. Maybe it is because of the availability of the mango all year round, unlike the avocado that is seasonal.

Boracay Experience Part II

May 20, 2008

Boracay sceneryAfter waiting for 15 minutes, we went to the beach to swim. We even forgot to take pictures. The place was spectacular or I should describe it as mesmerizing. The sand is almost powder white, the water is clear on some parts where there are no algae and the background of the beach is really wonderful. There were even yacht on the beach with different prints and color backgrounds on it. There’s a MYX yacht, VELVET, Yellow Cab and many more.

Is Computer Science right for you? 7 Questions to Ask Yourself

May 20, 2008

I have a lot of classmates who doesn’t want to be in their course (computer science). It’s whether they want to be a fashion designer, photographer and other careers that are not related to computer science. At the middle of the semester, they shift to other course. Others are struggling because their parents want computer science for them. Realizing this, I want to save others from picking the wrong career for them. If you want to be a computer science major, then you need to consider these 7 questions.

How It Was

May 19, 2008

02/10/99 After more than 10 hours flight, I finally landed in Bahrain. That was already 1am. Ate Bing from the Agency informed me that there will be someone to fetch me up at the airport holding a placard with my name on it. I looked around. No one was there. Until one guy approached me “Michelle?” I was afraid. I simply checked his uniform, when I saw the company’s logo, I was relieved. He took my bag and brought me to the parking lot. However, there’s still this feeling that what if he’s not the one? Hehehe! I was totally relieved when I finally saw that placard that he was supposed to be carrying with him. It was inside the van. He must have left it there. I was just quiet…. Not even a single word came from my mouth. I was new, what do you expect. Then he started, “here’s your photo, that’s how I recognized you”. Airport Drama

May 17, 2008

The day had come for me to leave. It was on October 1, 1999. We didn’t have money to rent a van. We didn’t even have something to spend for our snacks while traveling from Olongapo to Manila. I only had one small traveling bag with me. I didn’t have anything with me. The money that we spent that day was the last money that I had received from my boss. We commuted. Victory Liner. My parents dropped me at the airport. But before that, I paid respect and said goodbye to my relatives next street. Four of them sent their packages. Small ones but made me weep. There were notes in front of the envelope “ate, buksan mo ito pag nakasakay ka na”. They were all sealed… Fast forward to the Airport scenes…..

The last words that my mom said “o yang katarayan mo iwan mo muna dito, at baka mapano ka dun…. Mag-iingat ka, wala ka ng mommy dun”.

As usual my dad, a man of few words said “ingat ka, tumawag ka kaagad pagdating mo dun”.

I don’t remember saying anything to them. I was weeping, literally just weeping…. But… I had to pause for a while… the drama and all. I had to check my baggages in. First time you know… I managed anyhow.

Inside the lane, while waiting to take off. I opened the envelopes one by one.

I opened the big one. It was from my lola. It was a big tube of Colgate. Continue reading here.

Opportunity Knocked Once

May 16, 2008

Working away from home was one of the loneliest yet productive in terms of moolah moments I’ve ever had in my life. And we’re not talking about 1 year here but more than 8 years. I feel for those who are in this situation right now.

Mine wasn’t planned. It just happened. All because of love for my family. All because of money. I remember telling my mom, I will never leave home. I know how it feels being away from daddy for so many years. I won’t. Ever. But I had to. I really had too. I had no choice. I couldn’t keep up with our bills. I couldn’t afford watching myself entering a pawnshop every now and then. I couldn’t take all those things until I was given an opportunity to work abroad. Unexpectedly.

I was working in Makati as an Exec. Sec to the GM then. We recruit staff through an agency. They happened to be the recruiting agent of an employer in Bahrain. Once in a while, my boss sends me to their office in Mabini to collect CVs. One day it just came to my mind and told their Secretary “is it okay if I leave my CV here the next time I come by?” And she said of course, all smiled. She even added “actually you can fax it later”. I did. Secretly. I already had my passport ready at that time. But I never planned of working abroad. I just went with the flow when my barkada applied for their passports. I didn’t want my boss to know and find out about my application abroad. So I gave my Olongapo home number instead. How To Improve Your Breasts Without Surgery

May 15, 2008

There is no doubt that a lot of people want to enhance their breast size. It’s becoming more and more popular to get a bigger bust with out having to have surgery. There are women that still go for that surgical option, but they will often have fears of the side effects as well as what may happen after the surgery has been completed.

But, on the other side of the coin, people think that when it comes to a natural way to enhance your breasts, there is a fear that it’s a big waste of time for them. Women don’t want to put any kind of odd substance in their body just for a little help with their breasts.

SQUIRRELS IN PHIL. FOREST!

May 15, 2008

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Amid the crisis, however, the CSC Forest represents bounty. Today, squirrels can be sighted in the forest including snakes and other wild animals. It represents an ideal environment beyond the four corners of a government edifice. It represents an environment of what our country should be.

We lost track of the trees we planted at the Department of Agriculture and NIA. It reminds us of the past, however, whenever we see flowers of rain trees blooms as rainy season approaches while we walk along the alley of the Office for Legal Affairs. We can only hope, however, that those trees are now as tall, as big and cared dearly, where squirrels can hide, live and play in peace, like in the Civil Service Commission’s Centennial Forest, presently under Acting Chair Cesar Buenaflor.

What sort of “Little Loser” can a Rockstar be?

May 14, 2008

If I had my way, I’d be in t-shirts, shorts, and sneakers the entire summer season. “WTF, but we’ve never seen you in shorts EVAR!” Exactly! Come on gais, give the corporate rockstar slash almost-model a break! I don’t have much of a choice since I’m practically coerced by my day job to be in corporate drab on weekdays and man, those things can be annoyingly uncomfortable even when it’s raining out. Good news is, owing to the Intertropical Convergence Zone, we’re in for a shorter summer season this year as heard from the radio this morning (says PAGASA). Whether that’s a good or bad thing, blame it all on the ITCZ. Heck, we can even blame ITCZ for the hike in power prices since no one has balls big enough to own the boo boo!

On the subject of t-shirts (thank Jockey for supposedly inventing the tee in its current form way back in 1913 per the infallible wikipedia), I had for the longest time been wanting to get myself some David & Goliath goodies. A few months back, I was walking inside the Power Plant Mall and a statement shirt on David & Goliath’s show window caught my attention. It read “Trust Me! i’m a liar.” I went in, felt the shirt fabric, looked at the price, made a mental note to go back soon, and left. Good thing I didn’t buy the “Liar” shirt because, about a month later, I saw Juned wearing it and I’m not so keen on wanting to look like twins with anyone just yet. Sry, Juned-san.

Why Is The Philippines Poor?

Boracay Experience Part I

May 8, 2008

By 6 A.M., we started preparing ourselves to go to Boracay. I took a bath then went to the dining to have my breakfast—rice and fried egg. I noticed that they didn’t even take a bath. We were cramming since they were waiting for us. At the last minute, I even changed my top shirt since I looked like a wrapped “suman.”
It was a long ride to Caticlan. I think we made it to Caticlan around by 9 A.M. It was a fun ride though since they were talking gossips about their neighbors. What’s fascinating with the people here is the mentality of aristocracy. You can see big and nice houses even they were just vendors of “dilis” (small fish) and hog butcher while the richer people are living modest with their simple and small houses. Anyway, during the trip, my tummy ached and it felt like I need to go the comfort room. When we arrived in Caticlan, we bought our tickets for the boat ride. Since I’m with the locals, we bought our tickets for only 20 pesos. Tickets for non-locals are 50 pesos by the way. Better leave the talking to the locals or you will pay 50 pesos.

Hello Kalibo

May 8, 2008

Makoy at the airportMonday–I arrived in Paranaque City yesterday at around 11 A.M. I was worried that I won’t make it on time since heavy traffic builded up in Pasig City. Anyway, I thought our flight was 2 P.M. when it was actually 3 P.M. So there’s no reason to rush at all. My first airplane experience started on a bad light. I will not just explain why. On our way to the NAIA Centennial terminal, we were surprised that a beggar approached our car and asked for $5 dollars. Would you believe that? Maybe he thought we just arrived from the States and we’re “balikbayans.” It might have something to do with our luggages and big “balikbayan” box. We even thought that he was under the influence of illegal substance. What’s funnier with this beggar was when he realized that we weren’t “balikbayans”, he literally asked for loose change. He even pitched that he will buy NFA rice.

Where to Next? (Wanderlust Asks for Travel Advice)

May 2, 2008

I’ve always had the heart of a kaladkarin (from the same Tagalog verb which means “to drag; to haul along”). I’ve never made a secret of the joy I get from going to new places and just drinking everything in, no matter the destination. Whether it’s a trip to the glitzy and cosmopolitan or the rustic and back-to-basics, if I’m free, I’m in.

Summers have always triggered a serious attack of itchy feet; this, the longest summer I’ve ever had since I started kindergarten, is no exception. But now that I’ve indulged my inner lakwatsera (n. “wanderer”), she simply doesn’t want to stop.

So does anyone know where I can take my itchy feet next?
