Movie: Alvin and the Chipmunks
January 20, 2008
Remember the Christmas songs that sounded like children on helium. Well they are back and now they have a movie, of course, the title is “Alvin and the Chipmunks.â€
Alvin, Simon and Theodore were displaced from their tree home and found themselves in the house of Dave. At first the agreement was Dave would compose songs that the Chipmunks would sing and the latter would get to stay at his house. The Chipmunks were so disorderly and kept of making his place dirty with waffles and honey here and there.
One night, Simon, the youngest, approached Dave and asked the latter if he could sleep in his bed. Dave acquiesced. In the morning, he found Simon on his forehead. Nice and touch scene, this one. Â Dave was holding back his emotions of getting attached to the Chipmunks who were beginning to see Dave as their dad.
The Chipmunks’ became superstars and Ian showered them with toys and gifts. They felt that Dave did not want them anymore, and so agreed to go with Ian, the owner of Jett Records. However, the Ian maximized his investment and tired the Chipmunks to the point of exhaustion. Dave realized that he lost his “boys†and how he missed them and got them back in the end.
One big happy family.
The Other Boleyn Girl: My Most Anticipated Movie for 2008
January 16, 2008
I just finished watching the trailer of “The Other Boleyn Girl” in YouTube and I could not wait to watch that movie. With spectacular casts, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson (two of my favorite female actresses) and Eric Bana, a historical plot, and great cinematography, this movie will surely make it to the top box-office hits.
Movie: I Am Legend
January 13, 2008
Starring Will Smith, the movie was about New York being infected with a virus which was initially controlled or manipulated to cure cancer. However, something went wrong and all the people in the city started mutating and displaying super aggressive behavior. They ate flesh and had lost all their humanity.
Until finally, Will (sorry I forgot his screen name), a virologist who stayed in the city with his dog, found the cure and gave it to the girl who saved his life. There was a colony of survivors in the mountains where the virus could not survive the cold climate. Will gave up his life for this.
The lines that impressed me was when Will told the girl that there was no god. It made me question if there is one indeed with all what’s happening to our lives.
DVD Library #13: Heroes Season 1 5-Disc Set
January 11, 2008

It’s the last day of DVD Week and I’ve decided to make it special. So far, I’ve featured movies on DVD. It’s time to unleash the first TV show on this stupid blog series. Ladies and gents, Heroes Season 1!
…
Stupid crickets. Anyhoo, I have longed to watch episodes of the first season of Heroes as a single cohesive unit for months, and thanks to my former girlfriend (a topic for another time), I’ll long no more.
Movie: Desperadas
January 7, 2008
I couldn’t believe that a lot of young adults would line up at the cinemas just to watch the movie Desperadas. I guess there were not much movies to be seen during the yuletide season since most of them were for the viewing of children. Wait! I am still a child by heart, right?
Anyway, the movies was a little bit patterned after Desperate Housewives but very much Filipino in characters. All the four of them were half sisters. One was trying hard to have an image of still being rich but already in debt. One was trying hard to seduce his too busy husband. One was a sexologist whose domineering attitude turned off her husband. Last was a underwear designer who was about to get married to a recently converted born-again Christian.
Laugh your heart out and enjoy. Warning, not for the conservative type of watchers. ![]()
DVD Library #9: Spider-Man 3 2-Disc Special Edition
January 7, 2008

We’ll kick off DVD Week with the DVD that completed my Spider-Man Trilogy collection: Spider-Man 3 2-Disc Special Edition! I was psyched to see the movie in a theater, but I was most excited to own it on DVD. I mean, come on, a Spider-Man Trilogy movie marathon on a lazy Sunday afternoon? Geekgasm galore.
A NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
January 6, 2008
The students of Sacred Heart Academy of Novaliches, one among the oldest school within the Zabarte Almar area in Novaliches, successfully held its Christmas presentation last December. The students were the ones who basically produced, directed and organized the event entitled: “A NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS”. Despite meager resources, it was the students, who basically did all the work. It was them who inspired us to produce a low budget production to document the event. CONGRATULATIONS to Mathew P. Luga, President of the Athletic Club, one of those who initiated the project and to all   the students who organized the event including the teachers who helped them.

Start The Year With Some Blast From The Past Questions
January 1, 2008
Last December 29, my barkada and I had our post-Christmas party with the punk rock 80’s theme. Er, supposedly it’s punk rock 80’s but nobody really followed the theme (hmph). Most people are dressed in 80’s style, but not specifically punk rock 80’s. But, oh well, what to do? These are stubborn adults. Haha.
I was one of those planned the games and I thought of having a trivia contest. However, I found it hard to be writing only about the 80’s (’coz, you know, I was still young then, so I don’t remember much
). What was supposedly an 80’s trivia contest just turned out to be a general TV and movie trivia contest, from the 80’s onwards.
I’m posting the questions here and I hope you’ll have fun answering. And maybe I’ll post the answers later. ![]()

Bubba Gump
December 30, 2007
“Run Forrest run!”
They have shrimps, pasta and barbecues… but we didn’t really go there because of the food. We chose to have our dinner at Bubba Gump because of our (my?) love for Forrest Gump (and Tom Hanks).
Oh. But the food is great as well. =)
Read about my Bubba Gump experience here .
(Advance) Happy new year to everybody!

Beowulf - Film Review
December 8, 2007

The old meets new in this blockbuster animated film from Robert Zemeckis. “Old” being the ancient poem Beowulf and “new” being the cutting edge 3D technology employed by the visionary director Robert Zemeckis. Here, the pioneering director takes a second stab at the visual gimmickry that he used in Polar Express in where real actors became puppet masters to the digitally created characters. I say gimmickry, because it felt like a solution looking for a problem as the digital veneer offered no advantages over traditional live action/computer graphics combo. In addition, it introduced new problems like creepy eyes and forced movements. The hackneyed story didn’t help either.
The Golden Compass - Film Review
December 8, 2007

Plot
Review
Let me preface this review by stating coming into the film I had no clue about the book this movie is based on, Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. But based on the hullabaloo I can surmise its hugely popular in Caucasian land and its decidedly anti-Christian but I’m here to review a film and not talk about controversies. And review it I will.
The film made me grin with delight, not at the majestic polar bear, nor at the ultra cool witch or the dashing explorer but by the…
Fred Klaus
December 4, 2007
The movie was not about Nick Klaus but his brother Fred Klaus. Fred loved his brother when he was born but because of sibling rivalry and the way his parents always praised Nick, to the jealousy of Fred, he became bitter.
Due to his need for money, Fred agreed to work for Nick. But an inspector, Mr. North, sabotaged the operations of Santa Klaus and heated the bitterness inside Fred. This led to Mr. North ordering the closure of Santa Klaus’s operations. With 10 hours left before the dusk of Christmas Day, Fred had a change of heart. Nick had a back ache due to the fight with his brother and could not move. And since no one but a Klaus was allowed to distribute the gifts for the children, he decided to do it. And all ended up well.
Nice movie about sibling rivalry, acceptance of responsibility, forgiveness and understanding.
Better A Doubt Than Blind Obedience
November 22, 2007

It seems that the Christian groups protests again will be increasing as the day for the launch of “The Golden Compass†movie, based on the first book of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials Trilogy, gets nearer.
Emails have been circulating, warning Christians to beware of watching the film because it “promotes atheism for kidsâ€.
An example of such email is this:
There will be a new children’s movie out in December called “The Golden Compassâ€. The movie has been described as “atheism for kidsâ€and is based on the first book of a trilogy entitled “His Dark Materials†that was written by Phillip Pullman. Pullman is a militant atheist and secular humanist who despises C. S. Lewis and the “Chronicles of Narniaâ€. His motivation for writing this trilogy was specifically to counteract Lewis’ symbolisms of Christ that are portrayed in the Narnia series.
Clearly, Pullman’s main objective is to bash Christianity and promote atheism. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that “my books are about killing God.†He has even stated that he wants to “kill God in the minds of childrenâ€. It has been said of Pullman that he is “the writer the atheists would be praying for, if atheists prayed.â€
What Celebrities Were Doing Before They Became Famous

Did you know that Denzel Washington used to be a coffin polisher?
Or that Whoopi Goldberg was a funeral parlor makeup artist?
One More Chance
November 18, 2007
“She’s with me at my worst. You had me at my best. But you chose to break my heart.” Words (not exactly verbatim) came out from Popoy when Basia asked him na “ako na lang, ako na lang muli.”
There a lots of lessons to be learned from this movie. Being a control freak and not allowing your partner to decide on her/his own could ruin a relationship. Also sometimes we must get hurt for us to realize something, to grow, to mature. We could only truly love if we learned to love ourselves. Only mature people could enter a lasting relationship. Also, I learned from Popoy there is this 3 month rule. After a breakup, one should not accept or court within 3 months. That is something new!
Popoy and Basia were planning to get married after being lovers for 5 years. They were also officemates. However, Basia felt so choked by the controlling Popoy and decided to leave the company and Popoy. She was fortunate to find another job and started to live out a career she truly enjoyed. Popoy got devastated. But he was saved by a singer who became her girlfriend and just recently celebrated their monthsary.
Basia could not hide her jealousy and confessed to Popoy that she still loved him. Popoy was torn apart but later on decide to choose his true love. They talked. Instead of getting back quickly, Popoy accepted a 2 year job in Qatar to find the old Popoy in him. After that, of course, the movie ended up nicely.
Beowulf
November 15, 2007
Beowulf was a story about a man who got rid of a kingdom of it’s monster. The monster’s mother avenged the monsters’ death by killing his men while asleep. However, instead of the hero killing the she-devil, the former was seduced into making love with her. In exchange for his seed and the golder horn, she promised him the kingdom and power to enjoy. As long as the horn was in the possession of the she-devil, Beowulf would rule.
Later on, his kingdom was suddenly attacked by a fire-breathing dragon. A man bought the horn to Beowulf. This was a sign that his glory was about to end. He fought the dragon and killed it by taking it’s heart out only after cutting a portion of his under arm to reach it while hanging from a chain wrapped around the dragon’s neck. Tragically, he also died after killing the dragon who was his son who could transform into such beast.
Moral of the story: Never make love with the devil or you would have consequences to pay (”curse”).
A must see movie or a must read book
November 13, 2007

So an announcement: I am now lowering the regular number of posts to 3-4 posts per week from the usual 5-6 posts per week that I managed to sustain since the birth of Postcard Headlines last May 2007 due to stricter academic demands this semester.
And a news item on the must see movie I need to watch or the must read story I need to find. I only noticed this now:
Lions for Lambs
November 11, 2007
Lions for Lambs, though a work of fiction, is a commentary about the war on terror which America is presently engaged in. It presents varying opinions on the subject and encourages the viewer to take a stand.
The senator portrayed by Tom Cruise represents the politicians of America who battle in the war against terrorism in the safety of their offices. He is presented as an ambitious senator who, though skilled in intelligence, lacks experience in the frontlines. He uses the war on terror to advance his personal agenda.

Hide and Seek
November 11, 2007
I am not impressed with the movie Hide and Seek. The story was about a professor, who after being cleared by the court of rape and slay charges, moved his family to a house in a province. The house was being haunted by a husband who murdered his wife and accidentally killed his child. The three showed themselves to the professor’s family. In the end, when the ghost of the murdering husband was about to kill the professor, he was prevented from doing so by former’s daughter.
I was hoping for more chilling scenes. But only a few predictable scenes moved me from my seat but not that much. Rating 1-5 with 5 absolutely to watch, i’ll give it a 2.
Rebuild of Evangelion
November 9, 2007

To everyone who loves Evangelion, this superb Gainax production is set to release the 2nd movie part of it’s tetralogy on January 2008. The first movie part, Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone, was released last September 2007 in Japan and as expected, it went straight up to No.1. The first three movies are said to be newer and better versions of the anime series but the fourth movie will hold a new conclusion for this story.
Can’t Wait to See “The Golden Compass”
November 3, 2007

I can hardly wait to see the movie, The Golden Compass. It is based on the first of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy novels. Back in August, Ruel De Vera wrote a review on the trilogy in the Inquirer. In his review, entitled Don’t be afraid of the ‘Dark’, he said that the trilogy “may be ripe for discovery by readers who have witnessed the end of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series.”
Although I am a fan of make-believe worlds and realms, this is not the main reason why I’m excited to see the movie. The reason why I want to see the movie is that some Catholic leaders have started a campaign to boycott the movie which will be released on December 7, 2007. According to them, Pullman’s objective is to bash Christianity and promote atheism. And although anti-religious sentiments are not so obvious in the movie, religious conservatives are afraid that unsuspecting viewers might be tricked into buying Pullman’s books (available at National Bookstore), which have been called “Atheism for Kids”… Click here and continue reading…
