Beware of the White Rabbit
October 3, 2008
I love this candy, I was crazy about it when I was a kid. Unfortunately, the Chinese milk scandal has hit the US, maybe the Philippines too. I urge filipinos to be careful of eating this candy, this is a much loved candy in the Philippines.
Last week, California health officials announced it discovered traces of melamine in White Rabbit candy it tested. Queensway Foods Company Inc. of California distributed the candy and says it is recalling it.
Para sa Pinoy Konsyumer
September 29, 2008
The blogosphere welcomes yet again another empowering venue for the masang Pinoy!
Bilang consumers, we Filipinos, often than not, don’t have much choice in the kind of service we are being rendered, except to take it all with a grain of salt. Madalas, we just bear it and smile, pero with a heavy heart and deep inside, we can’t help but wish na sana magkaroon naman ng ngipin ang batas na nagbibigay proteksyon sa mga consumers, kung meron man.
As ordinary Pinoy telecommuters and bloggers, we have experienced mistreatments from several service providers over the years and always had to face a blank wall in case we opt to file complaints. Providers of internet service, telephone, postal, banking among others seem to have a tight grip on the consumers’ necks. Sad to say, poor quality of service is rampant sa kahit anong establishment, agency o company sa ating bansa and there is really nothing we can do about it.
That is why we welcome BalutPress.Com, a new website that aims to empower the Pinoy consumer by offering its webpages as a collective venue for consumers to air out their grievances against these erring service providers. If we contribute by submitting stories, videos or pictures of our complaints, we will be helping the many other consumers out there by warning them against these entities. In turn, ang mga entities na inirereklamo ay magkakaroon din ng pagkakataon na baguhin ang uri ng serbisyong kanilang ibinibigay sa mga patrons nila.
Ano pa hinihintay nyo? File your complaints na! ![]()
Melamine or melanine?
September 26, 2008
I am sure we all have heard about the milk catastrophe in China where milk manufacturers used a dangerous substance to fake high protein levels in milk. The practice has been exposed after several babies have died and thousands have been hospitalized in China due to illnesses caused by the substance.
Ora pro nobis
September 23, 2008
Because I’m not into writing anniversary statements these days unlike before, I leave this repost of an entry from my former blog to commemorate the imposition of martial law 36 years ago:
Orapronobis as directed by Lino Brocka, is a film that tackles the awful human rights situation in the country during the Aquino administration.
While the portrayal of the Philippine condition won it critical acclaim abroad, the film never got shown in public theaters in the country at all.
An article (some parts have been left off for the purpose of brevity) from the circa 1980 alternative magazine MIDWEEK explains why:
THE FILM
AND THE FUROR
Lina Brocka’s internationally acclaimed masterpiece has yet to be viewed by its virulent critics

Ask the Economist: Slow increase in employment rate despite high GDP growth.
September 3, 2008
Starting today, I’ll be entertaining queries pertaining to economics. You can email me your questions at musingsofayoungeconomist@gmail.com. You may also post a question at this PinoyExchange link
Here’s a question posted by drhenry4 on PinoyExchange :
(The) Philippine economy grew by 7.3% last year, the fastest in the country’s history, but employment rate grew by (a) mere 0.2%. How is this so?
For this analysis, I will be using the unemployment rate for convenience. By definition, the unemployment rate is the percentage of unemployed workers in the labor force. The labor force, here in the Philippines, is defined by the NSCB as “all persons 15 years old and over as of their last birthday who are either employed or unemployed.” In notation form, Labor Force = Employed + Unemployed.
In theory, what causes unemployment? Two things:
- Frictional Unemployment. This is the time it takes people in the labor force to look for a job. This occurs because it takes time to match people and jobs (due to preferences, educational background, previous training, mobility in terms of location, and specific industry demand for labor).
- Wage Rigidity. When real wage is above equilibrium level, the supply of workers exceeds the demand for them. Firms would then limit their demand for labor resulting in unemployment.

Inquirer not precise, specific, accurate
September 2, 2008
Headline: Davao bus blast kills 6
Is it not better to be precise and specific? Digos bus blast kills 6
Davao and Digos have the same five letters and would surely fit in the front of the Inquirer. But why did the Inquirer editors use Davao instead of the more accurate Digos as the site of the bus blast?

Are U-turns saving us money?
August 28, 2008
According to a recent study (reported here by the Philippine Daily Inquirer) by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), u-turn slots are helping us save quite a hefty sum. The study reports that the U-turns slots instilled by the MMDA generates Php 40 million to Php 50 million in savings for motorists each year since 2005. These savings are brought about by the increase in the average vehicular speed on major roads where 23 U-turn slots have been placed by the MMDA. According to the report, Php 2 billion are saved each year by motorists in terms of gains in productivity and opportunity alone. As for fuel savings, motorists are saving Php 42.84 million on nonwidened roads and Php 51.45 millon on widened roads.
I think most of you would be scratching your heads right now. Really? We’re saving that much? It doesn’t actually feel that way. U-turns have been, for the most part, hasseling most of us — often adding burden to an already congested road. I’m not even mentioning the hazard the concrete blockades brings at night. I do think that U-turns are saving us money in some way. However, let’s look at it from another perspective - costs.

The Economics behind Olympic Medals
August 27, 2008
Finally, the 2008 Olympic Games have come to an end. We can all go back to our normal and boring lives. But before we forget about Michael Phelps, the Bird’s Nest, and the Chinese prostitutes complaining about bad business, lets look at the final standings of the top four countries.
China has the most gold medals with 51. They garnered a total of 100 medals, second only to the United States. Second is the USA which collected 36 gold medals but garnered 110 medals all in all. Third place goes to Russia with 72 medals, 23 of which are gold. Great Britain received 47 medals, 19 of which are gold.
I know what you’re thinking. What does this got to do with economics? Well, a professor from Colorado College named Daniel Johnson tried to predict the outcome of the Beijing Games.

Philippine Juicy Fruits
August 17, 2008
Fresh from his stint in Harvard, United States, where he was granted scholarship in Publc Finance Administration, Usec. Robert T. Rivera went straight to the set of his show: Pilipinas Ngayon Na! Barely days after he arrived in the country, Usec. Rivera hosted the launching of the Philippine Juicy Fruits of Bella Dimayuga. Bella Dimayuga, the very nationalistic President of Bellestar Promotions who conceptualized the idea that her talents be named after Philippine Fruits to promote our country abroad, with his husband Ed, took charge of the affair. The event was splendid! The crowds were so energetic! The voice of “Marvic” a.k.a. “Makopa”, as she dances with the Bellstar Dancers, was so powerful! Usec. Rivera at the set, was amazed. We taped the event from our own cameras we brought in with us and uploaded Marvic’s performance. It was really splendid! Amazing! Amusing! Watch it for yourself to witness:
