This is fresh news in Singapore

Online Burol: Thinking out of the (Box) Casket

Habang nag babasa ako ng dyaryo, nadaanan lang ng mata ko sa obituary section ng Philippine Star ang isang advertisement, “Online Burol”, napaisip tuloy ako, seryoso ba yung Ad na yun?

Well seryoso nga sila, Online burol nga! “e-burol” ang tawag ng St.Peter Memorial Chapels (www.stpeter.com.ph) sa service nila. May web cam sa loob ng kwarto ng burol at free internet access pa! Target market syempre ang mga may kamaganak overseas. Para nga naman maka-attend parin ng burol yun mga kamag-anak or kaibigan na hindi kayang pumunta sa burol.

On the OFW Phenomenon, Mail Order Brides, Prostitutes, and More

Domestic helpers. Mail-order brides. Exporters of human labor. Scammers.

These are how people the world over have come to know us, Filipinos. And sometimes, I can’t blame them. For though it’s not completely true that these are what constitute us as a people, it’s not completely false either.

Our main export product is our people. A big chunk of our population — roughly ten percent — are Overseas Filipino Contract Workers (OFWs), many of whom are working abroad either as domestic helpers, construction or factory workers, nannies, and health workers, among others. The government calls our OFWs “the modern-day heroes,” because they have saved the country’s economy many times over through their remittances. Without our OFWs, our economy would have long gone under.

Out of order?

Have you ever experienced some confusion or ambiguity re: communication or use of language? Especially when you are in another country?

I was reading the post, The Senate is “Out of Order” in the stressed in the city blog earlier tonight. I was reminded of a time many years ago when Key & I were in a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City. We were trying to order some food and a couple of items we wanted were not available.

Now he is an expert on Mindanao

Ha ha ha! This is interesting.

After squandering public funds, taking advantage of “sanctuary funds,” and enjoying Senate “security funds,” now this guy is turning to the man thrown out of office for gambling “slush funds!”

Ha ha ha!

This guy is not only after fortune and fame. He wants to dip his fingers in Mindanao too! And goes to the president who waged a “total war” in Mindanao.

Bangkok’s transport system

The sky train and subway systems in Bangkok are recent additions to ease traffic congestion in the city. It helps some, I suppose. But the routes are limited to just within the city. It would be nice to have it extended towards major highways near the residential areas. Manila was way ahead with our LRT and MRT in the 80s. And more people are using the system there in Manila, it is indeed a real public transport. Here in Bangkok it is still quite limited to those who can afford. Anyway read more about my experience and thoughts about this here …
