Things I Learned from Pinoy Movies

Having been able to watch several Filipino movies in my life, I’ve learned quite a lot of things. Although I’m not an avid viewer, I’ve plucked several grains of ideas and lessons out of these films and willfully accepted them as facts of life. It’s not that original Filipino movies—though some people say it’s an oxymoron—are the only sources of virtues and vices in this side of the world for there are streams of information running elsewhere. It’s that these movies can sometimes make you laugh and cry at the same time; some of them are so good at causing you a moment of madness it’s ridiculous.

For starters, the main protagonists in action films are always either handsome or beautiful, making their sidekicks look more sorry than they actually do. They wear leather jackets and tight jeans, or anything that has long sleeves, creating the impression that they’re such an enigma. Short hair lathered with pomade and long ones washed in oil, they look good even when they’re shot in the chest by the villain who looks like a replica of Jorge Estregan or Paquito Diaz. And these cinematic heroes do get laid by a damsel in distress just before a bunch of hoodlums stage an attack with long rifles.

The Grumpy Ol’ Taxi Driver

Yes, he was grumpy. Grumpier than how I would have been if I was on my grumpiest disposition. And no, I was not exaggerating.

We rode this taxi from Elizabeth Mall, at about 1:45pm today (October 5). We just had our fill of cholesterol and calories and so decided that it was time to go ‘home’ and unwind. I didn’t get his name, aside from the simplest reason that I did not ask for it, he did not have his license or Taxi Driver ID Card plastered on his windshield – which was a good thing because if he did so, we would have known about it and easily mentioned it here. Right?!

Out of order?

Have you ever experienced some confusion or ambiguity re: communication or use of language? Especially when you are in another country?

I was reading the post, The Senate is “Out of Order” in the stressed in the city blog earlier tonight. I was reminded of a time many years ago when Key & I were in a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City. We were trying to order some food and a couple of items we wanted were not available.

Para sa Pinoy Konsyumer

The blogosphere welcomes yet again another empowering venue for the masang Pinoy!

Bilang consumers, we Filipinos, often than not, don’t have much choice in the kind of service we are being rendered, except to take it all with a grain of salt. Madalas, we just bear it and smile, pero with a heavy heart and deep inside, we can’t help but wish na sana magkaroon naman ng ngipin ang batas na nagbibigay proteksyon sa mga consumers, kung meron man.

As ordinary Pinoy telecommuters and bloggers, we have experienced mistreatments from several service providers over the years and always had to face a blank wall in case we opt to file complaints. Providers of internet service, telephone, postal, banking among others seem to have a tight grip on the consumers’ necks. Sad to say, poor quality of service is rampant sa kahit anong establishment, agency o company sa ating bansa and there is really nothing we can do about it.

That is why we welcome BalutPress.Com, a new website that aims to empower the Pinoy consumer by offering its webpages as a collective venue for consumers to air out their grievances against these erring service providers. If we contribute by submitting stories, videos or pictures of our complaints, we will be helping the many other consumers out there by warning them against these entities. In turn, ang mga entities na inirereklamo ay magkakaroon din ng pagkakataon na baguhin ang uri ng serbisyong kanilang ibinibigay sa mga patrons nila.

Ano pa hinihintay nyo? File your complaints na! :)

My Philosophy Says NO

But then, it failed me.For numerous reasons I let myself be joined in by a couple of counsellors into a membership to their fitness club.

It was a really cheap deal honestly. I mean a $120+ initiation feel then followed by about $50 a month. If I work out everyday, I could fully milk what I spend as initiation fee for. Less than 3 months. Not to mention the classes I’ll be taking.

Welll as of now, I can feel the lightness of my body and increased vitality and energy. I’m actually liking it.

As far as I’m thinking about my hate for things. It , if as far as I’m concerned, a proven thing that there is good in everything even if that thig is a somewhat a ‘questinable’ use of money.

But that doesn’t change my opinion for crocks. Oh how I hate those plastic shoes!

Korean Invasion

“More Korea towns rising in RP,” reveals a feature story in ABS-CBN News. Because of the country’s “steady climate” and the relatively low cost of living here in contrast to that in South Korea, more and more Koreans are flocking here than one could begin to imagine. Which shouldn’t surprise us why they have become the country’s top tourists. Despite losing businesses in Baguio and some other parts of the Philippines, Koreans continue to herd and breed in this country. Some time in the past, Korean telenovelas flooded the local tubes. Now, we see them in full flesh right in our neighborhoods.
