Why we broke at the Olympics

August 25, 2008

Our failure at the Beijing Summer Olympics has received differing reactions both across the mainstream media and the blogosphere, prominent views amongst them are those which express dismay and blame the athletes for being either too confident or underestimating to the significance of rigorous practice.

Mind me, sports in the Philippines really took a dwindling status since the day it became one of the avenues of politicking including public relations, promotion of personalities, betting and gambling, and electioneering. Sports is being used as an instrument of blowing the egos of politicos stuffin’ our athletes with promises of material wealth and yes, for the love of money everything became commercialized from basketball to boxing, the reason why the Philippines cannot erect a monument of prominence in the world of the best sporting nations.

On Solar Sports I watched a teary athlete from our Olympic contingent complain that he was not given enough attention during his preparations. It is true that they were trained just months before the Games (Philippines Sports Commission Chairman Butch Ramirez admitted it), something quite portending of the results when compared to countries whose athletes had already been training for the events more than three years earlier. Worse, the Olympian said that he practiced in irregular periods with non-permanent trainors and monitormen, reflecting the situation of our delegates whose needs in the field were not given immediate support. They were treated insignificantly and left to themselves like hens expected to lay golden eggs after some time. Our strategies are very far from other nations’ which study with close scrutiny the performance of their players during practice, providing proper recommendations and additional facilities to improve them whenever necessary. It doesn’t need much money because the right mind would no doubt apply improvisation, as what contingents from poor countries in Africa and South America did which led them to exceptional successes that even broke records.[continue reading]

THE ONLY HOPE FOR THE PHILIPPINES

August 21, 2008

By her own admission, GMA (Gloria Macapagal Arroyo) rightfully assessed that over the last decades; our republic has become one of the weakest, steadily left behind by its more progressive neighbors.’ Forty years ago, we were only second to Japan in economic stature, and way ahead of Singapore , Hong Kong , Malaysia , and Thailand . Today, at our present growth rate, it will take us 30 years to get to where
Thailand is. continue reading

Globe Broadband: Incompetent and Inutile

August 15, 2008

I don’t know how long can I still keep up with Globe Broadband’s incompetence.
First, I get intermittent connections and then, just a little more than a week ago, my connection just went pfffftttt…. I called up their hot line and a customer care representative promised to report the incident to their technical department and have someone over to check on the matter. He said it should be resolved within 24 hours. Well, what do you know, it’s been more than 220 hours and I still have yet to see someone from their technical department infront of my gate!

Becoming Somebody Else

August 12, 2008

“Writing in the much poorer world of 1899, [Thorstein] Veblen argued that people spent lavishly on visible goods to prove that they were prosperous,” writes Virginia Postrel in her article “Insconspicuous Consumption” for The Atlantic. That might just well explain why you see poseurs every once in a while in public places, flashing their “blings” and parading their signature clothes before the eyes of unknowing strangers, oftentimes to their bewilderment. That, too, might just as well explain why you see people prancing around with their gadgets in their hands for everyone to see. It speaks of worldly volumes. People might just as well try to conceal their private identities by creating distorted images of their own, much to their delight and to the incredulity of others.

Papers … waste not!

August 5, 2008

We use lots of papers in the office…for printing documents and the like, as well as cc’ing to relevant people. Everytime I print pages and pages of paper and photocopy more of them, I can’t help thinking about all those trees that have been felled, and the effect on forests and the environment, in processing and disposing them.

How can we reduce the use of too much paper? Read more here …

Making Sense of Mangoes and Jet Fuel

July 17, 2008

A few weeks back Christophe was telling me how he loved eating mangoes: that whenever he visited the Philippines he’d take every chance to have some, and then when he returned to France he’d bring several boxes of it as well, both for him and his wife. So I asked him, “Why bring so many boxes of it? Aren’t mangoes sold in France? Why don’t you just buy them there?” Of course, in my mind I thought it was probably cheaper for him to buy them here than in his country where the markup could be tenfold, so he might as well seize the opportunity to get more for less. His response was similarly within those lines, plus something more.

The Obscured Art of Personal Blogging

July 17, 2008

Let’s face it—personal blogging is a profitable niche no more. It’s a sad fact, seeing as how the original purpose of blogging was to serve as a sort of online journal. People’s tastes have changed, and blogging isn’t the obscure medium it used to be. Now, no one can wade through the Interwebs without hearing the word “blog” being mentioned—and boy, what a meaning the word has. The term now conjures images of fat geeks making money from home, and of websites that deliver to us breaking-news information even before television and print media get a hold of the [...] Continue Reading…

Time Out Muna ang Turista

July 15, 2008

Malapit na akong ma-overdue bilang isang turista sa bansang Singapore. Dalawa lang ang pwedeng mangyari sa akin: 1. Palayasin ako ng immigration dito (Matapos akong i-cane. Que Horor!) or 2. Yakapin ako ng bansang ito at gawin akong “one of them.”

Kesyo maganda raw, malinis at mapayapa. And true enough, ganoon nga siya. Bagaman, mukhang masyado yatang na-build-up ng mga manghang manghang mga taong iyon ang imahe ng bansang ito. Naging sobrang taas tuloy ng expectation ko.

To be honest about it, this place did not blow me away, contrary to what I expected.

Skinny-dipping in Manila Bay, anyone?

July 11, 2008

I read an article on the pollution of Manila Bay, which costs about Php 4 billion annually as a consequence of degradation. The major causes, as the article expounded: overfishing, pollution in coastal areas—thereby limiting tourism and other recreational uses—results in this equivalent monetary loss.

Yale’s EPI 2008 and the Philippines

July 4, 2008

The July 7/14 issue of Newsweek featured Yale University’s 2008 Environmental Performance Index (EPI)—“a global ranking of nations with the best, and worst, environmental track records,” the magazine cover said. Find out how the Philippines fared, as well as “who’s who” in the best and worst in being green around the world. Also, some concerns are highlighted, particularly on the application of weights for some categories like climate change, including some intrinsic limitations to some indicators, which may not be adequate enough to describe the Philippines’ performance.
