Pursuit of Happiness

August 26, 2008

Bhutan has this concept of GNH or Gross National Happiness. It stands in contrast to GNP or Gross National Product in the sense that GNP represents humanity’s drive for materialism while GNH goes well beyond that. Beyond tangible riches, GNH is the measure of a country’s “common welfare and infused with a good dose of spirituality,” as Katherine Marshall puts it. The King of Bhutan, His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, conceived GNH out of Buddhist principles, one of which is the “notion that the ultimate purpose of life is inner happiness.” Which is not suprising, Bhutan being a predominantly Buddhist country.

Bangkok’s transport system

August 26, 2008

The sky train and subway systems in Bangkok are recent additions to ease traffic congestion in the city. It helps some, I suppose. But the routes are limited to just within the city. It would be nice to have it extended towards major highways near the residential areas. Manila was way ahead with our LRT and MRT in the 80s. And more people are using the system there in Manila, it is indeed a real public transport. Here in Bangkok it is still quite limited to those who can afford. Anyway read more about my experience and thoughts about this here …

Why we broke at the Olympics

August 25, 2008

Our failure at the Beijing Summer Olympics has received differing reactions both across the mainstream media and the blogosphere, prominent views amongst them are those which express dismay and blame the athletes for being either too confident or underestimating to the significance of rigorous practice.

Mind me, sports in the Philippines really took a dwindling status since the day it became one of the avenues of politicking including public relations, promotion of personalities, betting and gambling, and electioneering. Sports is being used as an instrument of blowing the egos of politicos stuffin’ our athletes with promises of material wealth and yes, for the love of money everything became commercialized from basketball to boxing, the reason why the Philippines cannot erect a monument of prominence in the world of the best sporting nations.

On Solar Sports I watched a teary athlete from our Olympic contingent complain that he was not given enough attention during his preparations. It is true that they were trained just months before the Games (Philippines Sports Commission Chairman Butch Ramirez admitted it), something quite portending of the results when compared to countries whose athletes had already been training for the events more than three years earlier. Worse, the Olympian said that he practiced in irregular periods with non-permanent trainors and monitormen, reflecting the situation of our delegates whose needs in the field were not given immediate support. They were treated insignificantly and left to themselves like hens expected to lay golden eggs after some time. Our strategies are very far from other nations’ which study with close scrutiny the performance of their players during practice, providing proper recommendations and additional facilities to improve them whenever necessary. It doesn’t need much money because the right mind would no doubt apply improvisation, as what contingents from poor countries in Africa and South America did which led them to exceptional successes that even broke records.[continue reading]

August 25, 2008

Speculations Regarding the Eraserheads “One Night Only” Concert

August 25, 2008

…what if:

  • The event pushes through in the hands of another organizer?
  • What if the original organizers had decided to throw in the towel?
  • What if the private event now becomes, gasp, public?
  • What if your chances of seeing the band you’ve listened to in your youth were given to you at arms reach if only you were to pay for admission?

Sounds impossible? Read the rest of this article at fritzified.com.

X-Factor Special: Layla Miller, Secret Invasion, Final Crisis, and Other Face-Rocking Comics

August 25, 2008

I’ve been defying my limit of comic book purchases per week for the last 3 weeks, and it feels so good. I do expect to cut down on some of the titles after Secret Invasion and Final Crisis. I’m starting to really despise big “events”. Bah. Now, onto the reviews!

X-Factor Special: Layla Miller - This one-shot made me regret not picking up the Quicksilver special, thinking that it was just as awesome as this one. Peter David gives us a depressing but oftentimes funny peek into one possible future where Layla has been trapped since Messiah Complex, and it’s a very good read.

Arnel Pineda: The Next Best Thing

August 24, 2008

I was listening to one of my all-time favorite songs, Open Arms, on mp3 last night when I remembered that JJ had mentioned that Journey has got a new lead singer–a Filipino. I searched for Arnel Pineda on Youtube and my gawd, was I pleasantly taken aback! The guy has got the pipes. I momentarily forgot my sneezing and coughing as I marveled at the parity of the vocals of Pineda and the erstwhile golden boy (uh…with dark hair :)) of Journey, Steve Perry.  To read more, CLICK HERE.

Secret Recipe

August 23, 2008

The Secret Recipe is an award winning global cafe that was first formed more than ten years ago. Although several of its awards include Best Restaurant or Best Casual Dining establishment, the place is more popular for their selection of desserts especially their famous cheesecakes.

Their chosen name makes me think of a homey place that serves comfort food that will make you keep coming back. This thought though stops with the restaurant’s name.

Rouge

August 22, 2008

I don’t know the meaning of the word “Rouge” but the movie was rough! The story was about a group of tourist who explored the water of Australia with a guide. The guide told them that the crocodiles in the area were the wildest but it wouldn’t attack anything larger than they.

When they saw a flare in the sky and went to the area, little they did know that the there was a huge or should i say giant crocodile who felt that his territory was under attacked. So the giant croc begun attacking them. They were stranded in an island which was fast being flooded by the tide. They tricked the crocodile into attacking a bait of dead ducks so they could cross to the other side of the lake.

One of the tourist tried to save the guide and was able to tricked the croc into biting him. However with a long sharp wood, the stupid croc got his brain pierced and so it died.

If you would be in Australia, would you go the crocodile infested lake? I know i wouldn’t.
