First-time in You Jie Xiao Chao Restaurant
by: firsttimetravel
It was another holiday in the Philippines as we commemorated the Day of Valor, celebrating the bravery of Filipino soldiers who fought during World War II. Supposedly, my friends and I were scheduled to go to Corregidor Island, the fortress of Japanese soldiers. Unfortunately, the cruise liner called the day before our trip to inform us that the vessel taking us there experienced mechanical trouble, thus, our schedule was canceled.
Not to waste such a good day, we decided to visit various churches in Makati, Pasay, and Taguig, cities in the National Capital Region of Metro Manila. It was an extended Holy Week for us, minus the crowd and throngs of pilgrims.
But the highlight of our day was a dinner in a hole-in-the-wall eatery that one of our companions recommended. When you’ve been living in a place for a long time, you seem to look for unfamiliar places to eat, to try something novel, and to enjoy a newly discovered joint. It’s like finding out a secret and then you’re dying to share it with only your close circle of friends, but careful not to shout it out to the whole world. Nevertheless, it was a good secret to tell, and I’ll explain why.
by Claire Algarme
We went to a modest neighborhood in Makati. The restaurant was inconspicuous with only a simple facade, looking as if just another apartment door. It was until we approached the entryway and read an announcement from their management that confirmed we found the right place. The note stated that the restaurant, named You Jie Xiao Chao, would be undergoing renovation a few days after, a symbol that it was gaining a following.
As we swung open the frosted glass door, we were surprised to find all seven or nine tables full. Most of the customers were Chinese. A framed paper with Chinese characters hung on the wall, giving us a hint of the kind of cuisine we would expect from this restaurant.
by Claire Marie Algarme
The waitress handed us a compilation of photos of their menu. Enthusiastically, we perused what she handed us, huddled in the center of the tiny eatery. While customers were focused on their food, we were equally busy getting our pick and placing our order.
When one table became available, we immediately took the recently vacated chairs as more people arrived, peeking behind the restaurant’s door and waiting for their turn. After a few minutes of waiting, our rice orders came along with the fried string beans and chicken with peanuts.
What followed was a large bowl of steamed fish covered with red hot chili, which we mistook for tomatoes. The fish was truly tasty. Despite its spicy flavor that stung our mouths, we gorged the delectable fish head.
by Claire Algarme
A plate of spare ribs and another one of dumplings were placed before us. We never realized we had so much food! But what can we do when we have so many mouthwatering offerings shown to us?
So, a few days after I found out this little secret of my friend, I’m sharing this hole-in-the-wall, You Jie Xiao Chao restaurant, with you. Be sure to try it out yourself, and keep this little secret close to your heart.
Now, here are some other little secrets that can be whispered to your ear.

Calamba City is a popular tourist destination with its hot spring resorts, most of which are located in Barangay Pansol, and the Canlubang Golf and Country Club, site of many Philippine Opens. Calamba City is also the birthplace of José Rizal, the country’s national hero
Golden View Resort is located in the Province of Laguna
Laguna is a province of the Philippines found in the CALABARZON region in Luzon. Its capital is Santa Cruz and the province is located southeast of Metro Manila, south of the province of Rizal, west of Quezon, north of Batangas and east of Cavite. Laguna almost completely surrounds Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the country. The province got its name from the Spanish word lago, which means lake or lagoon. Laguna is notable for being the birthplace of José Rizal, the country’s national hero. Laguna is also famous among tourists for the Pagsanján Falls, the University of the Philippines campus and the hot spring resorts in Los Baños on the slopes of Mount Makiling, Pila Town Plaza, Taytay Falls, Majayjay, the wood carvings and papier mache created by the people of Paeté, the turumba of Pákil, the Seven Lakes of San Pablo City and the Hidden Valley Springs in Calauan.
Golden View Resort is blessed with Natural Hot Spring coming from the mystical Mt. Makiling
A hot spring is a spring that is produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater from the Earth’s crust. There are hot springs all over the earth, on every continent and even under the oceans and seas. Because heated water can hold more dissolved solids, warm and especially hot springs also often have a very high mineral content, containing everything from simple calcium to lithium, and even radium. Because of both the folklore and the claimed medical value some of these springs have, they are often popular tourist destinations, and locations for rehabilitation clinics for those with disabilities.
Golden View Resort is near Mount Makiling
Mount Makiling, also rarely Mount Maquiling, is a potentially active volcano in Laguna province on the island of Luzon, Philippines. It rises to 1,090 m above mean sea level. Legends surround the mountain, many of which relate to Maria Makiling, said to be the ‘guardian fairy’ of the mountain. The contour of the mountain is said to be that of her in a reclining position. Mt. Makiling is a popular hiking destination. The two major trails begin at the UPLB College of Forestry and Brgy. San Miguel, Sto. Tomas, Batangas. The UPLB trail is more commonly used, taking 4–5 hours to reach the summit (Peak 2). However, this trail is closed as of October 2007 due to trail damage wrought by Typhoon Xangsane on September 2006. The other trail from Sto. Tomas passes by other peaks, is more difficult, and requires 6–7 hours to reach the summit. Both trails are generally established and safe, although throughout the years there have been occasional reports of fatal accidents and injuries, especially on the Sto. Tomas side. Climbers also frequently encounter leeches along the way.
Golden View Resort is near Laguna Lake
Laguna de Bay is the largest lake in the Philippines and the third largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia (in terms of surface area) after Tonle Sap in Cambodia and Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia. It is on the island of Luzon between the provinces of Laguna to the south and Rizal to the north. Metro Manila lies on its western shore. Its surface area is 949 square kilometers and has an average depth of only about 2 meters. The lake is shaped like a stylised ‘W’, with two peninsulas jutting out from the northern shore. Between these peninsulas, the middle lobe fills a large volcanic caldera. Laguna de Bay drains to Manila Bay via the Pasig River. The lake is one of the primary sources of freshwater fish in the country. There is a large island in the lake, Talim Island, which is under the jurisdiction of the towns of Binangonan and Cardona in Rizal province.

How did we meet?
It was a night of dancing and dating as part of our school activity “”BALL””. Me and my commrades were busy providing security protection to all the students of our school against intruders. It was so stressful, we can’t even enjoy the night, but it’s worth getting along with my passion. I used to be an ROTC Advance Officer, we get off the gym and had a cup of coffee. I was busy texting my friends, but my phone went dead. So, i took time looking for a charger, I Haven’t seen one. I get back to the gym, ohhh…great…somebody was using a charger in the SSG Office..yipee!!!
I was like a stranger for everybody,i was at a different campus, cuz i was not visible enough..hehehe
I was so shy, but I bravely entered the office and tried to borrow the charger politey. They were so shocked and amazed cuz they never saw me before, I was a total stranger in their mind.
A girl approached and let me borrow the charger, it was’nt her charger though. I thanked her and returned the charge after few hours. She was cute and charming, but nevermind I am not interested.
The celebration have ended and were on our way to our office. The girl who let me borrow the charger said “HI”,so,”HELLO” in return.hehehe
After a week, my fellow ROTC Officer asked for my number, I knew that its gonna be a “PRANK”.Alright, I gave him a different number.I never queistioned if who’s asking for it, i just dont care at all.
Another week had passed, that officer asked me again ” Why was your number not working?”. “The girl who let borrow the charger was asking for it” my commrade said.Oh my apology,I thought its gonna be a “mess up”. Don’t you worry I will look for her whatever it takes.hehehe..
It was lunch time and i starved so hard. I checked the canteen, after lunch I had a pretty good conversation with my friends.Oh, it’s school time let’s continue this some other time, i said.
But when i turned back the girl was there chatting as well, I’m not yet sure if she was the one. I approached her, Are you the girl who let me borrow the charger and asked for my number?Yes, I I I am, she was blushing and muffled. She has a crush on me, I liked her too.hehehe
Most of the students thought that i was a playboy. They were all wrong, I have a lot of friends but I never got into a relationship. I was cute and had a good sex appeal..i dont think so..heheheh
Anyways, we have changed numbers, and there we started texting. We tried to get to now each other’s quality and traits.During the conversation there were some part that I wan’t the truth, I bet not all she had told me was real. But real thing was I have a crush on her. I knew that she liked me too.
She tried to convince me that she’s gonna look for a girl to get along with me. I frankly told her ” I have a crushed on you”. Ohhhhh…she was shocked..
5 days had passed, It was friday and I had a meeting with my commrades, and we scheduled for a talk.
We were walking along the road to the terminal at around 7pm.I courted her, It was hard to convince her, but when were almost the she said yes” lets give it a try”. She never knew that it was my first relationship.
