Office romance

December 14, 2007

Are office romances really kept secret?

I was chatting with some lady friends today about someone we knew who was having a “secret” relationship with a colleague. Secret meaning they think nobody knows when in fact, the whole office does. Secret meaning no one should know when in fact everybody does… everybody except the guy’s “official” girlfriend.

The story reminded me of another couple from years back. In fact, it reminded me of several other couples I know who have, at one time or another, indulged in this kind of a hookup. The type which we call office romance. Sometimes they are healthy and welcome, at times they are deceptive and most other times they border on the illicit or immoral.

Are We Truly Free?

December 5, 2007

True Freedom is the birthright of everyone. The freedom to choose and the freedom to achieve, to be free from worrying about money, to spend time as we like. Our hopes, and our dreams. The question is: Are We Truly Free?

From time to time, we need to reflect on our lives to see where we are now and where we are headed, just as the navigators of a sea-faring vessel does. I made a checklist to help you reflect on the things commonly held important by people.

Christmas time is at hand and it signals the end of another year. Come January, another year awaits us full of promises. This is a time to look back what happened this 2007 and a chance to plan ahead for 2008. This is the perfect time to chart a course so that we could achieve what we want in our lives.

One More Chance

November 18, 2007

“She’s with me at my worst.  You had me at my best.  But you chose to break my heart.”  Words (not exactly verbatim) came out from Popoy when Basia asked him na “ako na lang, ako na lang muli.”

There a lots of lessons to be learned from this movie.  Being a control freak and not allowing your partner to decide on her/his own could ruin a relationship.  Also sometimes we must get hurt for us to realize something, to grow, to mature.  We could only truly love if we learned to love ourselves.  Only mature people could enter a lasting relationship. Also, I learned from Popoy there is this 3 month rule.  After a breakup, one should not accept or court within 3 months.  That is something new!

Popoy and Basia were planning to get married after being lovers for 5 years.  They were also officemates.  However, Basia felt so choked by the controlling Popoy and decided to leave the company and Popoy.  She was fortunate to find another job and started to live out a career she truly enjoyed.  Popoy got devastated.  But he was saved by a singer who became her girlfriend and just recently celebrated their monthsary.

Basia could not hide her jealousy and confessed to Popoy that she still loved him.  Popoy was torn apart but later on decide to choose his true love.  They talked. Instead of getting back quickly, Popoy accepted a 2 year job in Qatar to find the old Popoy in him.  After that, of course, the movie ended up nicely.

Celebrating life, instead!

I wanted to blog something about suicide because of the blog of Liz about another suicide supposedly attributed to poverty, and because I want to advocate that the media should stop this media-hype because of the possibility that suicide might actually be “copied” and misconstrued that it is cool to commit suicide as what Prudence has mentioned in her blog as Werther Syndrome.

I had to refresh my psychology since it was already eons ago! I rummaged through the net and looked for theories of attribution, cognitive dissonance and suicide itself. But then, discussing suicide is in itself mind-boggling. So, I decided not to discuss suicide for several reasons:

Midnight in the garden of good and evil

November 11, 2007

Even before I finished training in medical school, I have already felt a calling to work in the world outside the hospital. The promise of attaining better and sustainable health outcomes faster by engaging populations rather than individual patients led me to the world of community development and public health. The overpowering atmosphere filled with sickness and gloom, hospital politics, and stifling routine hastened my footsteps away from hospital work.

But as I’ve began to spend more time in the university hospital again over the last few days, there’s this unshakable nostalgia of my previous hospital-based life: the flurry of activity in the emergency room; the stress of rounds and reports; the need to devour books and journals; the camaraderie among overworked and underpaid fellow health professionals; the adrenalin rush of a toxic duty in the ward; the extremely sound sleep after a toxic duty. What I miss most is the almost unbridled interaction with individual patients, as they and their families put their lives in my hands and they take on the unwitting role of my mentor and teacher.

One of them I will never, ever forget. Here’s why.

JK Rowling Says Dumbledore is Gay, Ee-hee-hee-hee-hee!

October 31, 2007

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. — John 15: 12

Billionaire author JK Rowling sparked a bit of controversy two weeks ago by revealing that Dumbledore, the headmaster of the school of witchcraft and wizardry, and Harry Potter’s mentor, is gay. Gay rights activists all over the world are rejoicing over the revelation. And why shouldn’t they? Throughout history, we have seen literary greats transform the attitudes and the consciousness of entire generations by using stories and lessons we can all relate to and understand. Literary greats, the likes of Shakespeare, Plato, Homer, Cervantes, Montaigne, Bacon, Samuel Johnson, Goethe, Emerson, Nietzsche, Freud, Proust, St. Augustine, and now, JK Rowling will forever be remembered for their stories and their revolutionary values. They not only entertain us with their tales, they also enlighten us with their values.

Enlighten?
It may not be too obvious to a lot of readers that JK Rowling’s books are meant to enlighten, but if you read her books carefully, you will find that JK Rowling has embedded a lot of values in the story of Harry Potter.  Click here and continue reading…

E-flowers/prayer campaign touches Inquirer.net

October 24, 2007

mar22-065.jpg

This just came in!

Earlier I have called for prayer and sobriety, which was followed up by my call for photographers to post a flower for Glorietta victims and their families.

It was not expected, but fellow blogger Erwin Oliva, who happens to be a PDI writer, too, noticed my blog.  Honestly I did not know how I could show these photos of flowers (read: show of sympathy) to the family of the victims.  Rhodora, who posted a really nice prayer suggested television.  But I guess, that would be self-promoting.  Erwin Oliva is a blessing in disguise.

Below is the link to the article he wrote, entitled:

Virtual flowers offered to Glorietta mall blast victims

This is already a great leap from this lowly blogger to get the message accross the country and the entire globe.  You are still welcome to share your prayers and keep on posting your flower photos (even if it was taken only with a celfone camera).

God Bless

October 20, 2007

It has nothing to do with the Glorietta Mall Blast Explosion… I just feel bad for days and stuffs… :(
18th of October supposed to be the 7th month anniversary of me and my tar… I have to admit that he was never the kind of man who remembers everything about “US” - he was never the sweet one though he used to be one…

We started out as friends. I was his confidante, his friend, and I was the only person whom he trusted with his deep dark secrets. I was the one who listens to all his heart problems. I was even the one who taught him that “Time will heal all his wounds.”

Whenever he’s hurting it’s me who’s beside him. I did give him my shoulder for him to cry on. There were a lot of times that he feels like shit and unworthy to be loved. But I made him feel that maybe that one person he fell in love with isn’t the right one for him…

October 5, 2007

As we mentioned earlier this week, the National Coming Out Day is almost here. It’s a time of freedom, individuality, self-realizations and acceptance. It’s time to be out and proud!

You see our dear friends, it may have been the fault of this blog why some people haven’t yet come out or don’t want to come out. We are surmising that this is about our use of the term bakla, we have identified ourselves as bakla and some people associate the word bakla with the author of this blog or this blog. (feeling sikat no? feeling? We’re just kidding, you know that, right?)

Well it’s about time we came out and reached out with open arms and open legs to all our dear gay friends out there! baklang aj is not the only gay in this village! we don’t have a monopoly, nor do we have the intellectual property rights to the term bakla.

You too can be gay, you too can be Bakla! Bakla ka, bakla ako, bakla siya, bakla tayong lahat!

Kaya’t halina kafateed, makibakla, huwag matakot!

If you’re not gay but have gay friends and family members, or if you consider yourself a fab hag, or if you are straight and believe in the causes of the gay and lesbian community, this is your chance! Come out and support gay bloggers! You can do this by posting an entry about YOU coming out to SUPPORT the causes of the gay community (e.g. enactment of anti-discrimination bill) or just post any of these images below.

We’re all in this together! Come out, come out!

The Rape of Marimar

September 17, 2007

The other day in Fiction class, we were discussing how men have taken advantage of women throughout history and how this has been documented in various types of literature. A classmate said, “oh, like Marimar!” Her comment made me giggle as I remembered my childhood days when we were such fanatics of the Mexican telenovela. Then my professor said something interesting:

“Come to think of it, she was raped… Marimar was raped!”

OFW SEX SLAVES!

September 10, 2007

The figures presented in Karlo Mongaya’s site concerning human trafficking of Filipinas is very disturbing! The video depicting how two senior citizen Americans traveled 6,000 miles away from their home, Mr. Troop Edmunds and Mr.Jerry Hawe, to rescue Lani, a Filipina from an alleged sex slavery syndicate in Malaysia was so moving. It shows how helpless Lani were, under the dictates of her ward. She went abroad in the hope of finding greener pasture only to be, allegedly, enslave through fear, intimidation, duress and, maybe, even drugged to become a puppet of her ward. What she earned out of her sweet, flesh and tears is not even enough to repay her indebtedness for food, clothing and shelter, if  her  ward is to sum it all. I thought that the Filipina rescued by Mr. Edmunds and Mr. Hawe from the alleged syndicate, is just among the 30 women allegedly held against their will in Limbang, Malaysia.

Research made by Karlo based on the studies conducted, however, revealed that Lani and her 30 other former companions still left in Malaysia are just part “of about 400,000 women trafficked within the Philippines annually, according to the US State Department’s Human Rights Report in 2005.” Are these Filipinas considered part of our OFWs? Are they protected by OWWA? If not for this two senior citizen Americans who stopped at nothing to recover Lani, these incident could not have been publicized. I wonder, however, what has happened to that maid in the Middle East who was allegedly raped by her ward.

The Fortune Tellers of Quiapo

September 4, 2007

Fortune tellers_erisac

They are self-proclaimed mystics — diviners who provide uncanny insight to those craving for a glimpse of the future. Their fees range from 100 pesos at the start of the session to 500 pesos and higher at the end.

Skeptics, however, regard them as mystic misfits — a gang of crackpots or fakes afforded with equal scorn as those document counterfeiters of Recto.

Nonetheless, these fortune tellers of Quiapo’s Plaza Miranda manage to remain in business; attracting a steady stream of customers who regard them with a strange mix of caution and reverence just in case they turn out to be true seers.

And in response to the public’s ambivalent attitude, they maintain a closely-knit association amongst one another for self-preservation, though adhering to a loose hierarchical order — the tarot card readers on top, the numerologists and palm readers next, and everybody else at the bottom. As with any pecking order, those on top think and act with utmost superiority; hence, the tarot card readers regard the powers of those below their rank as less potent and whose readings may lack accuracy.

Sex is overrated

September 1, 2007

Is sex really overrated? On the other hand, is any kind of physical intimacy between two people overrated?

This guy is going out with this girl. Let’s just say that he is courting her (courting in the old fashioned way I must say). So they go out, have lunch or dinner together, they watch movies, or go to the mall together. However, they are not “exclusive”. Ok fine - the girl has not yet said yes to a commitment with him. That should be ok right.

So its now a couple of months into the courtship and it has evolved. The couple gets closer, they hold hands, sometimes they kiss or hug. Eventually, they become intimate. But the words “I love you” have never been released from the girl’s mouth. The commitment is still a no-no. The guy gets confused. How come with all the skin thats touching - he could still not call it a relationship? How come, he couldn’t call her his gf? Show her off to his friends?

I’m No Beauty, So Don’t Expect Me To Be

August 17, 2007

It always annoys me whenever some guy pretending to be smart and funny and a gentleman, who hasn’t seen me yet, tells me this one line:

I don’t care about your looks.

Ahh. Never fails to earn my ire, really. One word, though: overrated.

Or, the not-so-subtle one: LIAR!!! *imitates Elle Woods in Legally Blonde*
