Microsoft PDF Plugin for Office 2007

February 27, 2008

I found this when I was looking for a way to convert the December 2007 Nursing Exam Results document to a PDF file. Previously, I was using other PDF printers and was not aware that Microsoft is offering an official save as PDF or XPS plugin for Office 2007.

This plugin allows you to export and save Microsoft Office 2007 documents in PDF and XPS format, you can also send these PDF and XPS files as attachments with some of the Office programs.

Yahoo acquired by Microsoft?

February 26, 2008

Early this month Microsoft proposed a 42- billion-dollar acquisition of Yahoo, a classic case of a buyer overbidding to blow any potential competitors out of the water said James Owers, a Georgia State University professor of corporate finance. Suprisingly, I found this while exploring Flickr, a popular online photo management and sharing application acquired by Yahoo almost 3 years ago, in search for the best online gallery solution. Holy smoke, what does Office Live gallery ad doin’ in Flickr?

A New Week Starts! News around the Web

February 13, 2008

I hope everybody had a nice weekend. Anyway, it’s been a while since my last post mainly because of the things I need to finish and no thanks to my cable crap Internet connections which decided to play on-and-off on me for several days.

Here are some interesting news I gathered while browsing on an “almost” dial up cable Internet connection.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Downloads

February 8, 2008

You may have seen reports of Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 floating on the net by now. I stumbled a couple of links and torrents on several discussion boards but most of them are either RC1 (refresh 1), Fakes or just plain old Trojans. Surely, a lot of people doesn’t want to wait several days to get a hold of their own copy and install it on there system.

For couple of days, the only people who can get a valid Vista Service Pack 1 are some beta testers and people who have an MSDN accounts. Luckily, several people made this available to the general public, so you don’t need to wait until March to get a hold of Vista Service Pack 1. You have two ways on getting the Service Pack.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 goes Gold

February 5, 2008

After much speculations, rumors, hype and the likes, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 goes Gold. Today, Microsoft announced that Vista SP1 has RTM’ed (Released To Manufacturers) and will be made available to the public in mid-March. Unlike previous service packs from Microsoft, Vista SP1 is more on bug fixes and performance enhancement rather than a “feature added” release.

Service Pack 1 is a very important milestone because it addresses many of the key issues that our customers have identified with Windows Vista over the last year both, directly and through programs like the Customer Experience Improvement Program. With Service Pack 1, we have made great progress in performance, reliability and compatibility.

There’s something about Flickr and Pinoy Kodakero

January 14, 2008

For the past 2 months, I am really hooked to photography. Well, I got a new gear, why not? And am I hankering for a better gear? Definitely. I have to buy polarizing filter for landscape and nature photography. I have to buy a neutral filter for protection and at the same time to improve colors and exposures. I have to have a macro lens so that I could capture the fibers of the pistil of the daisy. I have to have a 200 (1.8) zoom or better yet, if I really want a clear moon shot, a 300mm. Hmmmmm….sounds like hitting the moon–IT IS. Photography gears are very, very expensive and I do not have the money yet to buy those. And the downside of it all, I have to order my additional gears from eBay since Olympus products are not sold locally. I asked several stores already and they still have to order. And I do not want to purchase from eBay because I promise myself not to use my credit card anymore since I am on a tight budget and I can’t afford to have another bill to pay. Poor me. (Sigh!).

My Top FLOSS Applications (2007-2008)

January 2, 2008

As my 2007 year ender post (Part 1) and year starter post (Part 2), I listed down my 23 Top FLOSS Applications for Microsoft Windows. What is FLOSS you ask? It stands for “Free/Libre Open-Source Software”, libre is a Spanish and French word which is about “freedom”.

In the hacking world we explain it in these few simple words: Libre is: “Free as-in free speech” NOT “Free as-in free beer“. For the modern world, I just say, “Libre is: Freedom NOT free-of-charge” or “FLOSS or Free Software (FS) and Open-Source Software (OSS) is: Freedom NOT free-of-charge”.

That is exactly what FLOSS is, that is exactly what “Free Software” and “Open-Source Software” is all about - our “FREEDOM”, and those of us who stand at the middle of these two school-of-thoughts refer to it as FLOSS or Free/Libre Open-Source Software (some call it “FOSS” but “FLOSS” is more widely used and is more clear internationally).

So what are My Top FLOSS Applications for Microsoft Windows?

Read Part 1 here
Read Part 2 here

* “Free Software” and “Open-Source Software” are not to be confused with “freeware” and “shareware”. FLOSS applications will more likely refer to themselves as FS, Free Software, Open-Source Software, OSS, FOSS, or FLOSS.
* Freeware is more appropriately called as gratis software (gratis means free-of-charge)
* FLOSS are mostly gratis software at the same time but there are FLOSS applications that are not. Thus, do not brand a non-gratis FLOSS as ‘fake’ or have false claims.
* Not all freeware/gratis software are FLOSS. There are many freeware/gratis software out there that are being branded by sites, reviewers, and forum posts, as FLOSS when these are not.
* Always check the software’s license to confirm if the said product is a genuine FLOSS application or not.

Edubuntu for the Philippine ACES

December 29, 2007

Let’s go talk about the Philippines and the spread of GNU/Linux in this, as PGMA calls it - 2nd World Country.

“A Computer for Every School” or ACES is a government project aiming to put at least one (1) computer in every school in the Philippines. But with the budget limited, they are now considering using GNU/Linux instead, with that, I strongly recommend using Edubuntu.

An Open Letter to Mr. Technology

December 16, 2007

Dear Mr. Technology,

Hi. I’m Gino Carteciano and I’m a big fan. In fact, I took up Computer Science as a sign of my devotion to you. I’ve been mostly happy with you and your almost magical wonders, but recently, I’ve been getting harassed by your failures that are quite simply irritating and frustrating. I think I’m starting to hate you and everything closely related to you. Well, except the Bionic Woman.

Creating a continue reading link

November 8, 2007

Brevity was never my talent. Even if I was writing about a very simple topic, I always ended with a writeup longer than expected. This creates a problem for me in blogging. Long posts have a way of muddling up the layout of the homepage of your blog. The solution of course is to post only a few paragraphs on your homepage with a “continue reading” or “read more” link pointing to the url of your full post. Sounds simple, but as I later found out, not so easy to do particularly with the Blogger. Read more at Pinoy Seminars.

At home with Joomla!

October 24, 2007

viewpoints-home_page_15x7.jpg

REMEMBER THAT WEBHOSTING PACKAGE that I won at PBS Wika 2007 blog tilt? It has come to life with the help of Joomla. It is an Open Source Content Management System. Honestly, I do not know anything about web development or content management system. So I asked Jared, one of my previous officemates who is now working as Systems Administrator for the Provincial Government of Zamboanga del Norte and is currently based in Dipolog City, and he recommended Joomla.

The PBS Ranking System is (will be) shutting down :(

September 20, 2007

I’ve just been informed by Dreamhost, our beloved webhost, that they disabled the database of The PSB Ranking System.

“We have disabled your database “_rank” and the button.php under the
domain ranking.pinoyblogosphere.com.  Please remove ALL topsites files
and such from all of your domains immediately.  We do not allow this
software on sites because it causes huge loads.”

Sorry about that guys. We can’t do anything but to comply or else we might loose our other sites as well. tsk tsk. too bad. oh well :(

This was my short reply to them…

“okidoks. got it! ;) i understand and i’m so sorry about that :D”

And guess what? their response was… hmmmm…. interesting :)

“Thanks, it happens!  We are reviewing about adding to the terms of
service about topsites and other problem software, but it hasn’t been
done yet.  Sorry it wasn’t very clear.”

So… it’s not in the terms of service yet huh. :D I’m not sure if it’s in the (long) contract though. I have’nt actually read it *lol*. haaaaayyyy.

so what’s your take on this? should we just comply (shutdown the ranking system) immediately or should we try to ask DH to allow us until they update their terms of service?  watchatink guys? feedback naman dyan hehehe. tenk yu tenk yu ;)
nanghihinayang,

CSI Detective Wannabe: Tracking down my detractor

August 13, 2007

This morning, I was very excited to post my previous blog entry in PinoyBlogoSphere. As soon as I posted my entry at the PBS, and the link to my blog, I immediately got a comment. I thought it was cool! However, instead being delighted, it dampened my spirit, instead. I admit that I was furiously mad infront of my PC. But that was just a normal reaction, ins’t it? What further added insult to the injury was the fact that the comment came from an “Anonymous” person. “She” gave a name at the bottom of her comment, though (so I will call her a “she/her” in the meantime). Being a naturally polite and thinking person that I am, I did not immediately reply because I wanted to be very cautious in handling the situation. I went out, puffed one stick, drank ice-cold water, and then went back infront of my PC to compose my polite rejoinder.

Coming back from the bookstore this afternoon, I was still thinking if I should blog on the incident to get even. However, I wanted to be sure of my action. Hence, I browsed on topics about netiquette and I found out that it is simply not proper to get even because my blog is already a public domain. It was fine with me.

So what will I do? Ignore “her”? No.
