Disappointing Friendships
January 3, 2008
When a friend told me that she thinks another friend of ours considers me as one of the few real friends she has, I immediately felt my heart thumping like crazy. The thing is, my heart was beating not because I was really happy but because I always have this notion that I will always disappoint them when they consider me to be that special. I was happy though to know that but the feeling that I will disappoint her was more overpowering.
Married?
January 3, 2008
We’ve been talking about marriage and getting married. That’ll be me and a few friends. And we were all agreeing to the point that getting married may not be a big deal for some but it is. You do get married only once in your lifetime and it would not be a piece of cake.

Mothers as leftover receptacles
January 2, 2008
I thought that my mom was being herself when I observed how she used to finish leftovers from my and my siblings plate during mealtimes. “Mommy, I can’t finish my vegetables…†- to which she will respond - “It’s ok honey, leave it and I will finish itâ€. And wouldn’t you know, she will.
Several years later, me, a mom already to two very active boys who eat a lot, find myself doing the same thing my mom did. I now have this impulsion to finish off whatever is left in my kids’ plate (even my hubby’s sometimes hehe). Often, this impulse extends to the half-eaten whatevers that are in the refrigerator. Honestly, some cakes and snacks are too huge a serving for my kids to finish in one sitting. Mostly I am concerned of the food spoiling and being wasted. Other times I see it as leftovers of my hours in preparing and cooking the food that my family eats.

My Top FLOSS Applications (2007-2008)
January 2, 2008
As my 2007 year ender post (Part 1) and year starter post (Part 2), I listed down my 23 Top FLOSS Applications for Microsoft Windows. What is FLOSS you ask? It stands for “Free/Libre Open-Source Software”, libre is a Spanish and French word which is about “freedom”.
In the hacking world we explain it in these few simple words: Libre is: “Free as-in free speech” NOT “Free as-in free beer“. For the modern world, I just say, “Libre is: Freedom NOT free-of-charge” or “FLOSS or Free Software (FS) and Open-Source Software (OSS) is: Freedom NOT free-of-charge”.
That is exactly what FLOSS is, that is exactly what “Free Software” and “Open-Source Software” is all about - our “FREEDOM”, and those of us who stand at the middle of these two school-of-thoughts refer to it as FLOSS or Free/Libre Open-Source Software (some call it “FOSS” but “FLOSS” is more widely used and is more clear internationally).
So what are My Top FLOSS Applications for Microsoft Windows?
Read Part 1 here
Read Part 2 here
* “Free Software” and “Open-Source Software” are not to be confused with “freeware” and “shareware”. FLOSS applications will more likely refer to themselves as FS, Free Software, Open-Source Software, OSS, FOSS, or FLOSS.
* Freeware is more appropriately called as gratis software (gratis means free-of-charge)
* FLOSS are mostly gratis software at the same time but there are FLOSS applications that are not. Thus, do not brand a non-gratis FLOSS as ‘fake’ or have false claims.
* Not all freeware/gratis software are FLOSS. There are many freeware/gratis software out there that are being branded by sites, reviewers, and forum posts, as FLOSS when these are not.
* Always check the software’s license to confirm if the said product is a genuine FLOSS application or not.

January 2, 2008
We all know that 2007 has been a great year to a lot of artists, producers and music enthusiasts. Now, as far as great songs and albums are concerned, 2008 will seem to be another year of great songs and albums.
So here are the albums to wait for this year:
Less Firecracker Injuries This Year in the Philippines
January 1, 2008
Contrary to my prediction that there will be an increase in the firecracker injuries this year (because of some patients having firecracker-related injuries that arrived in hospitals early before the New Year’s eve), the Department of Health announced that there were only 446 cases that were recorded as of 6 a.m. of January 1, with 7 of the cases as injuries due to stray bullets. Seven percent of the recorded injuries needed amputations. Also, there had been no cases of Watusi ingestion. It was reported that among the commonly-used firecrackers, the “piccolo†caused the most number of injuries, particularly among children. This is perhaps because it takes a while before it explodes and children have the tendency to go back and check on it when it hasn’t exploded. Also, it is cheaper compared to other firecrackers, as it is sold at P10/pack only.
The celebration of the coming of the New Year was said to be generally peaceful, with the exception of cases of children injured and killed in the Visayas due to stray bullets, and several reports of stray bullet injuries in the Central Luzon and Northern Luzon.
On the other hand, in Bicol, there were no cases recorded of stray bullet injuries.
2008 New Year’s Eve
January 1, 2008
This new year’s eve, I noticed that there were less firecrackers in the streets compared to the previous years. I could come up with several factors on why:
First, the government, particularly DOH, put into law that firecrackers like triangulo, bawang, watusi, etc. would be illegal,
Second, firecrackers are getting more and more expensive each year (are those made from China cheaper?),
Third, people are beginning to get afraid of the burns from these explosives, and
Last, there are alternatives to celebrating with firecrackers, namely, partying while watching fireworks from afar.
Tradition has slowly been changing. I do not say that this is good but if I remember correctly, the noise created by the firecrackers was to drive away bad spirits. Now if we should make dancing as an alternative to celebrate new year, I guess, we just gave out invitations to these spirits to join us. Now, that is really what I call reconciliation. Ha ha ha Happy New Year guys!
Contagious music + videos of 2007
January 1, 2008
Producers get damn measly cent from making music videos and yet, they continue to lure us with their so called masterpieces. Since MTV gave a new spankin’ meaning to the word music video, every artist nowadays just wants to appear on it. They use this as their pimpin’ tool to stardom. A video that can launch or ruin their entire career, forever.

No frills leche flan
December 31, 2007
Leche flan is a favorite dessert that is ever present in many Filipino families’ dinner tables. This is especially true during special occasions, like Christmas.
I myself do not care what occasion it is or even if there is one, I just love leche flan that I find myself cooking it many times in a year.
There are many variations to cooking leche flan. I have tasted many different kinds throughout the years but only to come back to my mother’s recipe. Hers is a tedious and tiring process so I will just share the quick, no frills way to a similar tasting dessert.
An Open Letter to an Asshole and New Year’s Resolutions
December 31, 2007
To the Asshole who shutdown my computer,
Hi! How does this day find you? I hope you get hit by a fucking bus today. Thanks to your little activity, I have lost several important files that I was working on. Sure, MS Excel has this recovery thing, but that didn’t save all of it! What’s worse is that you didn’t even fucking call me about it. My phone number’s all over my email signature. It’s even in the directory. You just left a little gay note. You even used my post-it. Asshole. I bet you used my pen too, huh?

Banoffee pie of Red Ribbon
December 30, 2007
Its funny how a lot of people mistake “banoffee” as being made up of banana and coffee. I can only say that it is primarily due to how the word banoffee is pronounced that is causing this confusion.
Banoffee is actually a dessert made of bananas, cream and toffee on a base made of pastry or crumbs of graham or biscuits. That is the foundation of the delicious dessert but can be enhanced to contain nuts, chocolate, or yes, even coffee. So the term Banoffee is really a word combined from “banana” and “toffee”. If only people here pronounced it correctly as banofi rather than banowfi. Even the Red Ribbon commercial says it incorrectly.
Conversations With An A-hole
December 29, 2007
New theme, new post. I wanted to rant about the asshole who created this new theme that I’m using. What’s more is that I’d like to have a conversation with him and tell him personally what sucks in his theme. Because I’m too lazy to contact him, and because email is not personal (duh?!). Also, that girl in the picture is… Read on.
On Benazir Bhuto’s Assassination
December 29, 2007
The news of Benazir Bhutto’s murder first came to me through a text message from my philosophy student friend Dada on the same evening of the Pakistani opposition leader’s assassination in Rawalpindi.
I jestingly replied to him the next day that he shouldn’t worry about it. After all, wasn’t this the same Bhutto who said “I am ready to die for my country†when asked about the threats to her life in a Time Magazine interview last month.
But seriously, the political killing of the Pakistani leader and former prime minister, which has become the subject of condemnation from around the world, really is a cause for concern.
The large number of posts from bloggers all over the world on the death of Bhutto reaffirms this. Global Voices has set up a regularly updated Special Coverage page aggregating bloggers’ reactions to the assassination.
