S.O.S.

October 24, 2007

Somewhere out in the World Wide Web, there’s a site that’s mine (marocharim.com), but it’s completely blank.  I don’t know what to do with it.  I’m one of those people painfully ignorant about HTML, webhosting, and the technicalities of it.

I won the domain in the recently-concluded Wika2007 Blog Writing Contest: as it seems, I’m about the only winner in that contest who has yet to figure out what to do with it, much less get around to do what I’m supposed to do with it.  Matter of fact, I don’t know what to do with it.  Strangely enough, the site was already there for me to take since the last week of September.

I am now on my virtual hands and knees, begging kind-hearted members of the Filipino blogging community to help me out with that site: the only thing I know how to do is to make images in Photoshop.  Drop me a line at my site (marocharim.blogdrive.com) using any of the (in)conveniently-placed contacts there or through Contact Form, and please share with me your valuable knowledge on the matter of starting and running a website.

Thanks in advance.

At home with Joomla!

REMEMBER THAT WEBHOSTING PACKAGE that I won at PBS Wika 2007 blog tilt? It has come to life with the help of Joomla. It is an Open Source Content Management System. Honestly, I do not know anything about web development or content management system. So I asked Jared, one of my previous officemates who is now working as Systems Administrator for the Provincial Government of Zamboanga del Norte and is currently based in Dipolog City, and he recommended Joomla.

Chiswisang Baklush en Leksh Edades de Impormasyones:
Ang Gay Lingo sa Panahon ng Impormasyon
ni Miko D. Santos

Panimula

September 7, 2007

I was checking my e-mail today when I came across a legitimate e-mail from the good people of PinoyBlogosphere.com notifying me that because I won the Participants’ Choice Award in the recently-concluded Wika2007 Blog Writing Contest, I have the prize of a free domain name and webhosting service for one year.  Yup, the project of Marocharim.com is now a reality.  I’d like to thank everyone who supported me in that cause: the 17 people who voted for my entry, and of course the participants who chose me as their pick to win the contest.

Yup, Marocharim.com exists.  The only problem is I don’t know how to use HTML.

My idea for Marocharim.com is not the shameless self-glorification that there is in The Marocharim Experiment.  Basically, I’ll still do my blogging here.  I envision Marocharim.com to be a lot of things:

  • A repository for the things I have written that are still “alive” in my home computer.  This includes everything from term papers, short essays (what I like to call “non-experiments,” constructs, drafts, and so on and so forth.  It’s all a matter of compiling stuff into convenient PDF’s (protected to ensure that nobody passes off any paper I’ve written as his/her own) and such.
  • A repository for the things I have written that are found in those moldy notebooks in my bookshelf.  In retrospect, those scribbles make a lot of sense.  Some kid out there would deem my one-liners to be what Edmund Husserl was to Martin Heidegger (just an example: just because I consider myself Husserlian doesn’t mean that I’m a synoptic extension of Husserl).  Besides, all my best thoughts are written in those notebooks.
  • A repository for the things other people have written that may find a good home in the public space that is the Internet.  Consider those students, faculty members and such who have written so much in the way of great ideas, but don’t have a place to make themselves heard.  Here’s a great chance for them to do so.

Which brings me to my problem: I don’t know how to use HTML, and I don’t know shat about this “webhosting” thing.  So I’m asking goodwilled bloggers everywhere if you could teach me how to get around having an appealing site for these objectives.  Drop me a line.

And again, thank you: without you, Marocharim.com would never be a reality.

Blogging: The heart and soul of it

September 6, 2007

Almost a traitor
Honestly, I was also thinking about how to make money out of my blog, so I applied at an advertisement site. But sadly, I was not accepted because they think that my blog does not support language translation. I thought that the “culprit” could have been my Wika 2007 entry, so I thought about actually deleting this blog entry. Since I was already deeply engrossed with blogging, I might as well get money from it. After a careful deliberation, and accepting fact that I am not a conformist, and again inspired by Señor Enrique’s comment in my blog, that he is here for service. I do realize that I just wanted to share my thoughts and feelings about the mundane things about life, and being a Filipino. So the money-making motive is now completely abandoned. Deleting my Wika 2007 entry would also mean I am turning my back from the things I have believe in—to put it more succintly, I would become a traitor to my being a Filipino!

“Matatag na Wika2007″ Update

August 24, 2007

DONE WITH SILENCE

August 21, 2007

In view of Wika2007:

Some of the participants and non-participants question the aim of this contest; obviously, I don’t think its self-promotion, so scratch that. If you’re going to rant about the poll think twice (I was actually doing this before I read that there had actually been rants and now I realized that it’s still ongoing with it), the poll is just a part of it, so I do hope you have read the part where it states that the other percent comes from our judges. A distinguished panel is going through the entries along the week of the poll itself, more likely, as you read this entry.

Unlike its predecessor, the Kalayaan 2007, this time we made sure that the competition wouldn’t be focused on popularity alone. That’s where the decision of having it on 50-50 basis came in. However, there had been claims (just when it’s too late) that 50% for poll is just a bit too much. Geez! As far as I know, they should’ve read about it even before they submitted their entries in the first place. Also, let us not forget that we did ask for your opinion while we were still deciding about this contest and the mechanics were presented for review before it was officially posted on the contest page. Remember the conference?

Another thing, mind if I remind you of one more thought brought to this poll issue. I bet that you’d agree that being able to register is better than what used to be a click all you want scheme. In short, what you’re getting now is what we thought was the better option… better than the previous one, that is.

Still, to compensate the freedom of speech, we made a couple of suggestions to be responded by the participants to make them decide what to do with the percentage on whether or not the poll be eliminated and place the results instead as a “texter’s choice award” (or in this case, net fave? Pulse award?) sort of idea. The answer now lies in their hand.

Who are the judges? Please be reasonable enough. How could you assume that they could actually be a part of the participants? That would be a little too silly for my taste.

Our Judges identity were withheld for their own security, and might I say for the participants as well. Besides, why worry about it if we will be giving you the names at the end of the competition anyway? Be advised not to focus on the idea that we have experienced bloggers in the panel because those bloggers aren’t necessarily blogging only people. Take note that we also have Filipino and English professors from a highly reputable university in it. Try not to underestimate our judges.

Next:

Just what exactly is wrong with the theme? I guess it all lies on how one perceives it. The truth is: there is nothing wrong with it. How about the contest? Again, if the idea confuses you, it’s not bad at all to ask those who know about it right? Well, I’d still want to answer the raised question regarding the theme…

Reflections on Online Poll Ethics (Wika2007)

August 21, 2007

(Please bear in mind that I will be brutally honest)

Filipinayzd wrote:

The winners of the contest shall be the entries with the highest scores. Fifty percent of an entry’s score shall come from votes from PBS, and the other fifty percent shall be from the panel of judges.

I also had my reservations in joining Wika2007 because I felt that quality (judges’ decision) has the same weight as quantity (online votes). This reminded me of last year’s Metro Manila Film Fest Controversy where Enteng Kabisote surprisingly bagged the Best Picture award, beating the multi-awarded Kasal Kasali Kasalo, partly because 40% depended on box office receipts at the time of the awards. (No offense to Vic Sotto fans! I’m just questioning the MMFF) Read more

Official Entry sa Wika2007

August 18, 2007

Maraming Wika, Matatag Na Bansa

Lahat tayo Pinoy, iba-iba man ang salita

Walang yabangan at wala ding gulo
Sa totoo lang meron… silang nasa gobyerno

Inglish Ispiking?

August 18, 2007

San Beda College Alabang is an English speaking School.

Dekada Otsenta.

May pinagbago ba?

Oo nga may sumisikat ngang taga-Asya.

Anthem of Nations

August 18, 2007

I’m not all that fluent in the vernacular. It takes every strand of my humility to say that. I do not say this with my forehead held high, as some would; rather, I say this with my head bowed down. I blame this on my parent’s and our country’s (seemingly) ultimate goal of globalization. I grew up in a world of Barbie dolls and imported race cars, English-speaking cousins and a no-Tagalog-policy home. I was deprived of the usual dose of childhood patintero and tumbang preso, in fact, I grew up alone. I grew up in the comfort of only my toys and my parents, seeing as my neighbors were either too old or too young.

Globalization.

It has been one of the visions of our country. We dream of belonging to the booming economies of the first world countries. The notion that the universal language is the all-around remedy for globalization is so rampant that it makes our minds think that this is our only way. It becomes, what we think, the only solution. But why do we choose globalization when the answer to all our problems is right under our flat noses?
